My understanding of the controversy is that when it was made illegal, the US government chose not to use the formal Latinate “cannabis”, or the Anglo-Saxon “hemp”, but rather an (at that time) relatively obscure Mexican slang term used in Tijuana (“marihuana”, later respelled “marijuana”).
