Its also like the only game that really cares about enemies being armored lending to it being basically the only one with blunt weapon supremacy. Caestus my beloved.

The second half (two thirds, almost) of Cultic dropped just a couple months ago and is one of the best low-fi shooters ever made. I wouldn't even call it retro, just intentionally scuffed up. Pre-distressed shootery.

I love the games mechanically and it annoys me so much seeing folks toss most of it away all for the sake of their git gud shit. Like these tools exist to be used, and these games have so much variety for a reason. Fuck that shit about the right way to do things.

Nah I getcha. It's funny too because much as people clamor for more Prime, only 1 was particularly good, and I feel like they forget about 2 and especially 3 just going off in a different direction. Metroid is a series that's never understood what works and neither have the fans and it's tragic.

Yeah sorry about that. Metroid's always been the unloved child. To be fair though even the Prime games quickly lost sight of what made Prime 1 good. I'll go to bat for 1 and nothing else because Retro never quite understood what made 1 work imo and the direction they took it in just didn't work.

Like I think you also forget that Fusion and Prime came out at the same time. Retro did it's own thing and Sakamoto fucking hated it. He hated the Prime games and how they changed Samus compared to his vision. Super Metroid for him was I'd argue a fluke.
