Part of the problem is that the cookie check was imposed by legislation, but even if that legislation no longer applies to the UK there’s nothing that would force companies to spend time and money removing it just for the UK, so we’re stuck with it.

It’s the same reason the UK had to adopt the USB-C standard after the EU made the move, the UK isn’t a big enough market for global businesses to treat us as a special case, so we’re always going to get lumped in with our bigger, more powerful neighbour.

I've done something similar in the past and gone for Chamberlain or de Valera, but I'd be interested to see if anyone would be prepared to tackle someone like Chiang Kai-shek.

Hitler would be interesting if anyone managed to back it up with a decent argument. It could quickly identify very clever individuals, the people who are just contrarians looking for a reaction, and the kooks who will need special handling, which would be a useful discovery on Day 1.

I'm just waiting for the moment when they realise that sticking massive tariffs on imports isn't going to bring down prices, as I've been repeatedly told in the last few weeks. Nothing drives home political consequences like a hit to the wallet.

Since at the time every major central bank was carrying out their own version of QE, and all the major currencies were in freefall, everyone was devaluing their currency at the same time so no-one stood out from the pack. If we try that unilaterally it would be a different story.

Your bank can always print money, but that devalues the currency, increasing the cost of imports, and driving up the cost of servicing the national debt. It generally doesn’t end well, think Germany in the 30’s or Argentina in recent decades.
