A work in progress of a drawing based the story of an autistic person. To Karen or not to Karen "I want to speak to the manager." I heard myself say it, shaking with anger and mounting frustration. To the casual passerby, it must have looked like the start of a typical "Karen rant." It felt that way to me too. I knew perfectly well that the reason I was so angry was actually something very minor. "Drying 2 euros," said the sign in the holiday park's laundry room. Not "drying 1 euro per 15 minutes," as the customer service representative on the phone had said it cost. I even tried to obediently do as she said. She said I should just keep putting money in until the machine indicated the desired drying time. By that point, I'd been pacing back and forth for over half an hour. From the laundry room to the shop to change money and then back to reception to ask what I was doing wrong. The fact that the machine indicated only 45 minutes of drying time for 4 euros was the last straw for me. The sign said €2, the customer service representative said €4. Both were a departure from what I actually envisioned. As an autistic person, I have a book of coping strategies for when things don't go as expected. I'd followed the signs, asked for help, done what the operator said… none of it helped. As the dryer stubbornly started counting down from 45 minutes, swallowing my fourth euro without any return, I felt incredibly autistic. The "drying €2" sign was actually a lie. The operator I spoke to apparently didn't understand what I was so upset about. I would be exhausted for the rest of the day. My mind would have been working overtime. It felt so incredibly unfair, unjust. When the manager finally arrived, I wanted to raise my voice. I wanted to emphasize my frustration with insults. I wanted to go full Karen. Instead, I told the manager I had autism and what was happening inside me. She then walked me to the laundromat. She explained to me that the sign was indeed incorrect and needed to be adjusted. I even got my four euros back so I could start the dryer again. I didn't. I didn't have the energy to fight that infernal machine again. I took my half-dry laundry back to the tent and waited a day and a half until it was finally dry. For the manager and the staff, the whole problem was solved. For me, not really. Because it was emphasized to me again: I have a disability.
