In the English-speaking community, “don’t teach English for too long in Japan” is a common piece of wisdom. On Reddit, you can find many horror stories about foreigners making the mistake of teaching English for too long in Japan. Here is my take on the issue. The problem isn’t English-teaching per se. The real problem is that English-teaching is often (but not always!!) a type of irregular employment in Japan, and people who are irregularly employed are an “untouchable” underclass in Japan. Japanese people who are irregularly employed are also treated badly by society and their employers. Japan systematically punishes the irregularly employed underclass. When foreigners sign up for jobs like English-teaching (or any other sort of irregular employment common among those who know limited Japanese), they aren’t often aware that they will be part of an oppressed underclass in Japan. The formal Japanese term for irregular employment is 非正規雇用, which refers to workers who don’t have the formal status of seishain 正社員 (“regular employee”). Irregular employment doesn’t necessarily mean you work less; many irregular employees (like English teachers) work 40 hours a week or more. Irregular employment means that your job isn’t seen as a real career. This means that your salary doesn’t increase with your experience, and you will be paid the same junior-level salary even if you have decades of experience. Does that sound like English-teaching? That’s because English-teaching is a form of irregular employment, and irregular employment is designed to hold people down like this. Irregular employment is also meant to have fewer or non-existent benefits and strongly associated with abusive working conditions. Basically, all the common problems people associate with English-teaching are actually just common problems with irregular employment. While foreign workers overwhelmingly get stuck in irregular employment due to their limited Japanese abilities, irregular employment is a huge social problem for Japanese people as well. Japanese people who are stuck in irregular employment include single mothers, the lowly educated, the disabled, the neurodivergent, the chronically ill, etc. These are marginalized people who don’t fit the typical mold of “proper citizens” and suffer from great discrimination. If you think I’m kidding when I say the irregularly employed are “untouchable”, check out the following data that shows irregularly employed men have significantly lower marriage rates than regularly employed men. Other difficulties facing the irregularly employed include being considered undesirable renters and being rejected by landlords; this means that they aren’t allowed to live in the same space as “proper citizens”. They also have problems getting loans and mortgages. The irregularly employed often don’t have enough pension to retire, and they might need to work grueling manual labor jobs against their will in their 70s, 80s, and 90s. They have significant difficulties navigating important life events like dating, marriage, having kids, renting, buying a house, and retirement. “Normal” life stage things that “regular society” takes for granted are beyond their reach. They really are a underclass who struggles to achieve a “normal” life. What’s even worse is that this underclass status is often inherited. Poor and lowly educated parents being stuck in irregular employment often pass the status to their children because they can’t offer the children a stable family and educational environment. As someone who is fluent in Japanese and assimilated into Japanese culture, I can tell you that there is absolutely a deep social stigma attached to irregular employment. Of course, I’m not talking about the rare exception of the rich person who is irregularly employed, such as a rich housewife who works 10 hours a week for fun or a successful independent former-McKinsey consultant. I’m talking about people stuck in lowly paid jobs that aren’t considered real careers, like cashiers and janitors. Though Japanese society isn’t as unequal as many other countries like China and Saudi Arabia, the distinction between “regular society” and the irregularly employed underclass is pretty obvious and can be felt in your everyday life and how people treat you. As a foreigner, it might be difficult to tell which part of your experience comes from the class factor and which part comes from being a foreigner. Unfortunately, foreigners who know limited Japanese are overwhelmingly likely to be stuck in irregular employment. In the English-speaking community, the “foreigner experience” strongly overlaps with the “irregularly employed experience”. When you read the horror stories of foreigners in Japan, it’s often hard to tell if the horrible experience comes from being a foreigner or being part of the irregularly employed underclass. I actually think a lot of the bad foreigner experience is actually part of the underclass experience. As a foreigner who is capable of working regular Japanese jobs and not connected to the underclass, my experience of Japan is actually very positive. I try my best to help other foreigners distinguish the “foreigner experience” from the “irregularly employed experience” by explaining my perceptions of Japan from outside that underclass. I also try my best to help foreigners get out of that underclass. Please connect with me on Patreon! Important clarification: in rural areas, irregular employment is much less of a problem because rural folks are usually irregularly employed and living is cheap. (Farmers aren’t seishain…) This might explain why English teachers in more rural areas often have a better experience. However, irregularly employed rural folks suffer from discrimination if they ever move to the cities. They are still a underclass compared to city folks who have “proper” jobs. I went to see the movie “The Blue Boy Case” in Umeda today. It was tough to watch because it depicted many forms of discriminatory language and violence against trans people, but I’m glad I watched it.
Afterward, I joined an X-gender meetup and had a peaceful, enjoyable time.
