You are right, phasing of different parts of the masterplan seems to be a first. Even if this project seems to have a better plan in place, if this city serves the best interests of the government, or the people who are paying for the project with their taxes.

The plan for a special economic zone reminds me quite a bit of Trump's plan for freedom cities, with Nevada having so much federal land, and Trump expressing his interest in building his new cities on Federal land, I wonder if these projects might align.

These new cities, marketed as environmentally friendly, are always frustrating. Increased tourism will always be less sustainable than the status quo, and new city projects have to clear huge areas, and the construction of new cities is less green than decarbonizing existing urban areas.

If the South African government actually acted upon its claims of sustainable development, they would want to phase out their dependence on coal for electricity, this is very clearly a ploy for outside investment, using green words to help sell a product.

Interested to see what will be included in the master plan. How will the built environment be planned to accommodate the preferences of those so far right that they need to retreat into their own enclave? I would not be surprised to see the closest to racial exclusivity as they can get.

Has there been any updates? The article mentions that construction will finish after the pandemic lockdown was lifted. Were any of the promises and renderings actually realized?

With conversations of new mega developments in other Gulf states occurring, Oman is notably absent. These projects seem to be on a smaller scale than what we see with NEOM. It is interesting to see Oman getting in on the new cities craze, albeit through tourism, proven to be a safer bet

The term "climate apartheid" really is applicable here. While the new capital is planned to save the new government from the environmental disasters poised to hit Jakarta this century, the taxpayers funding this new capital will not be able to afford life in the new capital.

Imagining how many resources and land were used in this project that anyone could see was unfeasible is disappointing to say the least. It really makes me wonder if the bubble of new cities will pop when enough projects have failed.

It is hard to believe that anyone really thought this project was ever going to be completed. It is even more disappointing that they are enlisting Akon's help once again in a new development that he claims will be more realistic.
