Packed event at Labour Party Conference, where we put our findings on the impact of stigma to the Minister for Social Security & Disability.

Dehumanising processes are creating a culture of fear. If the government wants more effective employment support, they need to first rebuild trust in DWP.

Last night along with @thefabians.bsky.social we hosted our panel event on stigma.

It was great to hear the Minister, and so many of the audience questions emphasise that humanising the system is critical to any reform. Too often people are met with suspicion and control instead of support. #Lab25

This week @turn2us.org.uk released new research with Uni of Bristol, demonstrating how stigma towards claimants has broken our social security system.

Alex's story brings to life how damaging and nonsensical it is to treat people with such suspicion and contempt. This isn't working.
‘The benefits system is set up to make you fail – it’s devastating’
More than half of all benefit claimants (51 per cent) say that claiming has damaged their mental health, research from welfare charity Turn2Us reveals

It lays bare the urgent need for reform built on dignity, fairness, and trust. As the #TimmsReview begins and the government's welfare reforms continue, our solutions will demonstrate how the government can deliver a more efficient, effective and compassionate system.

However, currently 68% of people claiming social security feel ashamed of seeking support and nearly half of claimants say the system makes them feel undeserving of support.

- 64% of people who had applied for support felt that the system was trying to catch them out.

- Half of claimants said that the experience made their mental health worse.

- Only 15% of people found the support from their work coach useful.

Our social security system is a vital public service, that helps us stay afloat when life changes. But right now, people are being treated with suspicion and contempt when they try to access support.

We have today published new research with the @bristoluni.bsky.social which demonstrates the extent to which stigma has been embedded into the design of our social security system: bit.ly/47XWX5e
An image with the Turn2us logo and tagline "Tackling financial insecurity together." The main text states: "Our report highlights how institutional stigma within the benefits system fuels demoralising and infantilising processes, reducing confidence and worsening health. This not only damages claimants' self-worth but also undermines trust in the DWP and Jobcentres." No child should have to choose to miss out on their education because of family income. We must stop punishing children and instead set them up to thrive. Scraping the two-child limit would be the single most effective step to cut child poverty.

Pupils in England from low-income families are being priced out of costlier GCSEs. Nearly 1 in 4 children on free school meals say costs like trips or equipment stopped them taking certain subjects, compared to just 9% of other pupils (Survation/CPAG).

Along with the anti-poverty charity, @z2ktrust.bsky.social, we’ve led on an open letter to the Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms. We're asking him to take some key steps to make sure that involvement is genuine.

This autumn, the government is launching the Timms Review.

We're pleased to see that they've promised to involve disabled people and those who have experience using the social security system in this review of the PIP Assessment.

But we're asking Sir Stephen Timms to take some key steps to make sure that involvement is genuine and not just token.

Lisa’s situation highlights how inadequate our social security support already is for support with the additional cost of disability, especially so if you are out of work because of poor health.

📣 New Resolution Foundation analysis 📣

With the incidence of disability likely to continue increasing as the country ages and ails, growing employment among disabled people will be vital to meeting Government employment targets.

Professor Ben Baumberg Geiger, a Research Associate at the Resolution Foundation, said:

“The Government has, rightly, set an ambitious target of 80 per cent employment. But it will fail to get anywhere close to this unless it tackles the huge employment gap faced by disabled people.

“While some metrics – that don’t account for the increased incidence of disability – seem to show a decreased employment gap for disabled people, prevalence-adjusted measures show that disabled people’s labour market inclusion has in fact been getting worse in recent years.

“Supporting this group into work will be a vital part of getting Britain working. Halving the disability employment gap would take the Government more than halfway towards meeting its 80 per cent employment rate target.

To build a system we can trust, the government needs to review the whole system, listen to disabled people and organisations like ours. In a country as wealthy as ours, sickness should never mean hunger or eviction.
