1/ 25 years ago today, September 16, 2000, journalist Heorhiy Gongadze, founder of Ukraiinska Pravda, was abducted and murdered.
His fearless reporting exposed corruption and helped shape independent Ukrainian media.

1/ On September 10, 1854, Ivan Tereshchenko was born, Ukrainian entrepreneur and philanthropist.
He funded Murashko’s drawing school, supported Kyiv schools, and with his family helped found the Kyiv Free Hospital for the poor - today’s OKHMATDYT, partly destroyed by russian shelling.

Since 1990, annual gatherings take place near the monastery walls to honor the heroes.

3/ Losses: 29 UPA fighters killed, 1 executed in captivity. German losses estimated at 90–100 killed & 150–200 wounded (some sources claim over 500 killed).

The monastery was destroyed, but the memory of Zahoriv became a legend of courage & sacrifice.

2/ On the night of Sept 11–12, the insurgents decided to break out of encirclement.

Hiding their wounded in the basement, two groups slipped into the fog at dawn, throwing grenades & shouting “Glory to Ukraine!”
12 broke free. Others fell in battle.

1/ On Sept 8–11, 1943, near the Zahoriv Monastery in Volyn, 44 young UPA soldiers resisted 1,500 German troops.

With only 1 mortar & 4 machine guns, they fought for 2.5 days against artillery, tanks & mortars, turning the monastery into a fortress.

Ostrozky’s fame spread across Europe as a defender against Moscow’s expansion.

1/ On September 8, 1514, near Orsha, the combined Polish-Lithuanian-Ruthenian army under Kniaz Kostiantyn Ostrozky dealt a crushing defeat to Muscovy’s forces.

Ostrozky used brilliant tactics: crossing the Dnipro overnight, feigned retreat, and devastating artillery fire that broke Muscovy’s lines.

This date was chosen not by chance. On August 29, 2014, during the Ilovaisk tragedy, russian troops shot at Ukrainian soldiers who were promised a “green corridor.”
Hundreds of defenders were killed in cold blood. It became one of the darkest days of the war.

1/ On August 28, 1974, the CPSU Central Committee and USSR Council of Ministers issued a resolution introducing universal passportization.

For the first time, collective farmers received passports, until then they were tied to their villages, unable to move freely.

At 9 p.m., deputies carried a huge blue-and-yellow flag into the chamber. The hall rose and sang “Ukraine Has Not Yet Perished.”

On July 24, 1990, it was raised above Kyiv City Council.
On August 24, 1991, deputies carried it into the Verkhovna Rada during the Act of Independence.
