"Hospital bed days...plunged from a collective 858 days in the year preceding move-in to a forecasted 53 days."

Supportive housing costs less than shelters, it costs less than jail, and it saves the system millions. If you want to end homelessness, build supportive housing.

#Canada is missing millions of affordable homes. The Federal Housing Advocate is calling on #Canada to scale non-market housing to solve the housing and affordability crisis. We have the tools – we need the political will to act. Her advice to government includes:
A magnifying glass placed on a set of two documents sitting in front of an opened laptop. The black text box that reads: “New Reports”. Below the text reads: “Human rights-based housing targets for Canada”.

In BC we're building a map of every publicly-owned parcel, layering it with helpful tools like infrastructure servicing, disaster risk, and site characteristics. This map will give programs like BC Builds the opportunity to proactively seek the best places to build affordable housing.

New StatsCan research out this week - highlights:
1. Renters are moving a lot less often - % of long-term tenants is up to nearly 45%.
2. New tenants are paying on average $400/month MORE than tenants who have stayed for 5+ years. In 2001 it was negligible.

More research just released on the predatory eviction practices of REITs.
When a financialized landlord buys a building, evictions go up an average of 187%, even though the tenants are the same. In one shocking example, Starlight Investments increased evictions filings by 10,079%.

Important research that highlights the fact that investor-owned #housing (both "mom-and-pop" landlords and financialized REITs) are more likely to evict racialized households and long-term tenants for short-term financial gain.

Affording rent on a one-bedroom apartment requires a salary over $100,000 in Vancouver. For someone 25-34 earning the median income, a 1-bed is going to cost 60% of their earnings.
For many young people, achieving #housing security seems like a pipe dream.
