Interesting that you call them contemporary, in that they sort of disappeared, died (well, one literally), and have generally had a very slow but continual output since the 1980s. They do seem to sit outside of time, which Sean Kitching very nicely said at the end of his article on the new record:

The best new music I’ve heard all year is by Cardiacs*, who are admittedly ‘my favourite group’, if you can have such a thing at a later age. Their new record might be declaredly titled LSD, but there’s no evidence I can hear of that drug or any other really.

*wholly marmite, I am aware.

Reread the first chapter this afternoon in the Dalkey yankey translation (incl. snickering) and just watched the equivalent bit of the film… B & P are very touchy-feely, esp. B. Looking forward now to the next parallel episode.
