He often lingers near my window, grazing on the patchy grass of the garden. On days when I’ve slid the pane open, he’ll sometimes let me touch his nose, my hand trembling as it meets his warm, damp snout. It’s a fleeting moment, a quiet agreement between us. Outside, in the open garden, Bruce is different. He bolts if I approach, his powerful hind legs carrying him beyond reach. But at the window, I am only half a man, torso and arms, no threatening stride. He sees me as less, and so permits the closeness. It’s a curious thing, this barrier of glass and frame that makes trust possible. I wonder what he thinks, if he thinks at all, or if it’s merely instinct that keeps him calm. The photograph sits on my bedside table, a reminder of these strange meetings. Bruce is no pet, no tamed thing. He belongs to the scrub and dust beyond the home’s walls. Yet, in these moments at the window, there’s a kind of understanding, fragile as the morning mist. I don’t seek to own him or to name him beyond my own need for connection. He comes, he goes, and I remain, watching from my small square of glass, a witness to his freedom.
