"Forgive me," she breathes finally. "I've… rambled on overlong—" "No, no!" His interrupting startles them both. Ears pinned, she flinches, and those widened, levin eyes stare back at him, a different kind of haunted than what she'd just been describing but no less bridling. G'raha lowers his hands, settles his breath. The clearing of his throat crackles against the tension. "I… would hear more! Ah, if you— if you don't mind, of course, I won't for—" "Nay, nay, I…" Vio sighs. He catches her relief, brief as it was. "You deserve to be known," he answers. And it's odd, because it is his voice that speaks, and his conviction, but it is all the same without him. He means it regardless. "You deserve to be known as you are. And I would— I would know you, if you'll but grant me leave to do so." The silence hung for a few heartbeats too long. She looks away, stray furs on her flicking tail still simulating shock. Again G'raha struggles to swallow. Too forward, he fears. Too sudden, too brazen, too familiar— "I will forever regret, until I breathe my last, my leaving them," Vio answers. "The ire I left my sister with. But I-I… I just couldn't bear remain there anymore… And I look around us now at these remnants of what was that have not been permitted to rest… The urge to flee lingers somewhere deep. I'm fighting it every time I meet gazes with them." "'Tis putting it lightly to proclaim this a most unsettling simulation of paradise," G'raha agreed. "Yet circumstances being what they are, 'tis effortless to consider what would drive one to cling to that which no longer is… Why one may be so unable—nay, unwilling—to accept the finality of death." "I'm not unsympathetic to Alexandria's plight," argues Vio, "but what they've done, what they're doing, is too far by half. 'Tis an affront to the lives of those that sacrificed themselves that the star may continue on. But were I to see any one of my fallen comrades here, now…?" She huffed. "'Twould prove difficult to resist the temptation to talk to them, j-just one last time. To… to apologize for—" Vio's throat bobs, "for my… transgressions, my failings." "Aye… I've many and more that I have to answer to," sighs G'raha, "yet it is that drive, that need to live and prove you are no longer that man, that you are better than he was when he failed them, that makes their death continue to have meaning beyond senseless loss. 'Tis a driving force, what keeps us pushing forwards." Vio snickers and it tastes bitter. "Ever the optimist." He knows well the intent laced within the remark. He knows, too, that refusing to give it weight does not lighten it. All the same he chooses to bear it and believe that it does not crush against his spine. And he does not wonder for a moment whether he was no less shrouded than the digitized shades forming the bubbling brook of people above.

G'raha's mind is quick to turn then to the fantastical, the otherworldly. He'd heard much of Ul'dahn history… a denizen of the undead, mayhap? Or as voidsent, much like Zero? Something hisses at him to cease his presumptiousness. His thoughts quiet. "Which was?" he asks. "To run." It was a shocking answer. He never knew Vio to run from anything. It was always "towards," headlong, recklessly leading the charge against everyone else's arguably better judgment. He swallows. It was that very quality he sought in her. It was that very quality he used against her. "All these… these simulacra—because they certainly aren't people now, even though they once were—they remind me much of her. Too much. Forged only of what the aether remembers but nothing of the soul… though oft I wonder if mine judgment of her is too harsh…" Another breath to steady her trembling hands—another anomaly. "But all I knew… was that I couldn't bear looking her in the eye a moment longer. Wherever she'd gone, whatever she'd done in those moons afore the falling of Dalamud… it took her from me. From us—I'll not live in the ignorance that I was the only one who grieved. So too did my dear sister. So too did my dear brother, even though he but barely got to know her, newly orphaned as he was." "I… knew not that you had siblings." It was a bit of a careless statement. Vio was Miqo'te, same as he—they all often did. It is almost imperceptible, the way her face shifts… almost. It is brief, fleeting, but he catches the subtle twitching of her lips and sharpening of her eyes but moments before they faded. His heart cowers. Whatever it had been that he saw, however, it was not inflected on her tone when next she speaks. "Aye… nary a day goes by where they don't cross my mind. My sister, in particular." She laughs something humorless. "In the years between our mother's disappearance, the three of us were all we had. Especially as the deaths mounted and the elementals grew ever ireful. As our brittle lines of defense quickly thinned and snapped beneath the weight of anarchy. Not a soul left willing to protect the runts of the litter, so to speak. Not when all else were no less hungry, thirsty, aching, and dying than we were." G'raha snaps back to that day, years ago, when he caught a small tribe in migration wandering far too close to the newly-emerged Crystal Tower. It's a memory that often comes back to meet him in reminiscence, a fitting reminder of the scale of death and displacement the Calamity wrought, of those that would brave dangers untold and unforeseen for a taste of safety. A reminder that he should never get too caught up in the wonder of it all when suffering lay just beyond his feet. A reminder that despite it all, hope thrived, as too did life. And it kept him grounded. "I thought her but a shade, at first," Vio spoke, breaking G'raha of his ruminative reverie. "Didn't know what to make of her, thought it couldn't possibly be her after those five agonizing years… But my sister, she… she rushed in to cling to her, all but pulled her down into the soil and dead leaves, and I knew, then. But I never forgot the look in her eyes. Wild and confused, as if the woods themselves were a stranger. As if there were something she realized she'd lost—didn't know it until that very moment—and in her scrambling to reach for it found it could not be returned to her. When I dream, I see it, and it haunts me to this day." He would hold her, if he could, if only to stop her shaking. If she permitted it. He doubted she would ever, and so he does not. Instead G'raha worries one palm against the other.

"Tell me, my friend. Have you ever wished to be reunited with someone who has passed away?" It almost startled G'raha at first, how quickly Vio appeared to arrive at her answer. It proved equally as unsettling to see her conviction recede much like the waves against the lower bricks of the walls on either side of their vessel. The swell of her chest deflated slowly, surely, until she rested arms against knees hidden beneath her armored robe. Even within this gilded eternity reality sought to weigh just as heavily, inescapably upon them. It seemed to press most keenly against her neck and she bore the top of her head to him as she obscured her eyes from view. In a fleeting thought G'raha considered the manner in which the horns of her headpiece appeared almost to poise themselves for attack and he couldn't help but entertain the idea of her butting him clean off of the boat and into the river. It mattered not the subject of the moment; in every possible future that joke would have been left to die, and so he swiftly brushed it away. To focus instead on her lips felt more a violation than any poorly-timed jest yet as it was all of her that he could see, it was where ruby irises fell. As did her mouth into a short, taut shape, betraying a familiarity that he prayed he would never again see descend upon her… though he knew full well he'd not the authority to keep it from her. "I've told… passing few about my mother." G'raha's ears perk. Bushy tail bristles. He'd seen, after all, in the Aitiascope, the losses they'd suffered without him. He'd longed to hear—from her—of the Source's Minfilia. Of Haurchefant and of Ysayle. Of Moenbryda, Papalymo, Wilred, Conrad… of every death whose weight she yet carried. Any one of those promised tales would have been expected. Not this. "Thancred knows," continues Vio. "And so too did Minfilia, once." "The… Calamity, I gather," G'raha prompts. Warily, cautiously. "After… a-after a fashion… aye." Quiet again, for a time, as they trudge lazily onwards. "I'll make plain mine opinion of this place: it is naught less than utterly perverse. To deny the dead the peace of eternal slumber… to disrupt the careful balance of the Lifestream, of the aetherial sea… nay, I'll not ever agree to it. It is aberrant, an offense to life itself." G'raha finds himself leaning forward as Vio speaks. Ever a magnet, she was, to which he found himself hopelessly drawn. 'Hopelessly' ever being the most befitting descriptor. His tail flicks, almost as if to remind him of his place, and he curls it loosely around his calf. "However," Vio's gaze turns from the faux-wooden floor of the gondola to the facades of facades passing them by, to the imitations of Alexandrians dressed in regal finery all and flashing insouciant smiles back at them, "I'll not hesitate to admit that I am but a man, no different from you nor any other. Were… w-were I to see her here… as she was, as I knew her…" Vio stops. Her tail shivers. G'raha's ears flatten to the tune of her own and for a chilling few breaths fears she found her there, wandering the crowd. He resists the urge to turn his head and offer his own eyes to her search. The scrunch of her brow, the tenacity of her eyes as if she's trying there and then to beat back the lost. He instead studies them, studies her, but in between the lessons he's learning finds himself left with far, far too many questions that he'll never have the courage to ask. She shudders, wet and deep, and her shoulders slowly settle. It's with a solemn yet bitter calm that she speaks again. "Hah, I find myself rather lucky that I've already faced this very breed of horror long, long ago. I cannot help but ask myself if my answer then would be much the same now."
