People accused the devs of being pedos for making a tragic game based on their OWN CHILDHOODS. Seriously people, media literacy, critical thinking, expand your baby brains a bit, leave your comfort bubble, think. Depicting immoral things does not mean you condone them. There is more to life than ☀️🌈

I think about this particular game I love that depicts a young girl going through abuse and trauma, it's sad and heartwarming altogether, and there's a story being told. The devs said it was based off of their own childhoods, but did that stop people from accusing them of glorifying child abuse?

Many artists throughout history and today, often process trauma and life experiences through their art. Tons of heavy and "problematic" stuff comes from personal events, so shaming artists for depicting those things in their art is not only stupid, but dismissive to their pain and self expression.

And this fact is why media literacy is dying. When everything is "problematic" no matter what, despite the context, we can't broaden our perspectives and understanding, and can't grow. It's the flattening of important conversations and experiences for the sake of comfort.

Often, art is supposed to make you think, feel, examine different experiences than your own, even if it makes you uncomfortable, especially if it does so. We have gotten so used to curating these toxically positive echo chambers of comfort that we can't think critically about anything anymore.

Take that shouldn't be hot but is: depiction ≠ endorsement. Not all art is supposed to make you feel good and safe. Depicting serious and taboo topics within art often has much deeper meaning than what the lowest common denominator will take at face value. Online purity culture is hurting art.

How do all of you other artists deal with mental paralysis when it comes to art? I draw like once or twice a year because my motivation and inhibitions are extreme. The fear of failure is real with me, I can't improve or even trust the process because I always feel like I'm making a mistake
