Maybe ask them, this sounds like you're saying this, did you mean that? Rather than, you know, leap straight to this:

I think the best thing is to assume good and also intelligence of people. Even when someone is blatantly being thick, just let it go. It just makes +you+ look like the dick, pointing it out. I expect I've been guilty of not managing this sometimes. But it's what you should aim for, I think.
