Sad news from the US, as Tom Lehrer has passed away and now we've lost the greatest political-musical satirist of all time. Though admittedly this is not a huge genre. And to think he made all his songs in 15 or so years over half a century ago. I'm still listening.

So with YPS we’re kind of at the same point as WPS was around 2010-15, when countries realized they actually needed to implement their NAPs?

Then again if the goal is to become an auhoritarian regime…

Its not just Russia. The push to defund the BBC, the Finnish YLE, US NPR etc is all part of an international illiberal movement, whose leaders sit not just in the Kremlin, but also in the white house and even in the Finnish government.

NEW: BBC bosses will make push for government to take back costs of the World Service, amid an “aggressive” Russian state disinformation drive

Now “undeniable” case for using world service to push western values, they say. State media moves in when WS moves out.

All part of charter renewal chat:
World Service must be fully state-funded to counter disinformation, say BBC bosses
Ministers must cover full costs of championing western values abroad, senior BBC figures to argue

In "The Effects of Parental Leave on Attitudes Toward the State," Elin Naurin and co-authors (including @poliscimonica.bsky.social & @dietlinds.bsky.social ) investigate the different gendered effects of parental leave on policy attitudes in 🇸🇪.

Research Article: "The Effects of Parental Leave on Attitudes Toward the State" by Elin Naurin, Elias Markstedt, Monica C. Schneider, Mary-Kate Lizotte and Dietlind Stolle.
Abstract begins:Social role theorists argue that the roles that people inhabit and their experiences within can alter their attitudes. We use Swedish panel data to demonstrate how involvement in the parental role changes attitudes toward government policies differently for fathers and mothers. For fathers who take parental leave, the caregiving activities accompanying this leave conflict with stereotypical masculine experiences and such counter-stereotypical engagement should be transformative. We find that fathers who take more parental leave favor care provided by the state. For mothers, we hypothesize and find that the caregiving role during parental leave confirms a female-typical role, resulting in small effects that are not significant.

I just made the same call. No EUSA this year.

When we start treating digital sovereignty as the security issue that it is, regulation suddenly becomes an enabler.

Glad to hear, hope not too bad of an emergency. I’ve also been saving the Martian pod for a speculative fiction binge.

European rearmament might be a lot easier if we had not scrapped the WEU as a defence alliance 14 years ago. Potential lesson there on terminating international governance structures that could instead be just suspended.

I’m eager to see how this will be written in a few years; was the termination of the Western European Union in 2011 a mistake in hindsight?

What are they going to do, bribe the russians? We need a credible european weapons industry first.

We either pivot hard now for european sovereignty, and support Ukraine, or try to muddle through the Trump term and get pulled into the same decline the US is facing.
villesavoranta.bsky.social
The first thing we need are european digital services that can actually compete with the americans, and we are very far from that. Until then our data is there for Trump and his cronies to play around with.
