My goal was to learn more about telling compelling data-driven stories. Hannah encouraged me to write about something fun & personal and then guided me thru each step of the process: from pitching a story to refining the angle & polishing the map. Here are some stills of the piece:

I’m excited to share a data art project I’ve been working on this month! It’s a quilt made using the data of all the books I read in 2023 📊
A photo a crinkly and colorful quilt. It’s made up of 28 color coded squares each encoding a book read, listed in 7 rows of 4 quilt squares. Small hand made stitches add texture to the quilt. The quilt is pictured again, one is highlighted and describes the structure of the quilt “each block represents one book I read in 2023 for a total of 28 books” A horizontal bar chart is made up of photo-clipped quilt squares. It shows that I read 8 fantasy books, 5 data visualization books, and 1 thriller book amongst other categories of contemporary fiction and historical fiction. A histogram shows the number of books I read of each length, 13 of which were between 300-400 pages with one outlier of length 582.

Thanks for the invite @amycesal.bsky.social ! Going to share some of my data viz projects as I learn & grow. This is one of my favorites so far - a set of 4 coasters about the Colombian coffee trade (images show front & back of each coaster)
A coaster depicting that Colombian coffee coffee is exported to over 41 countries and that of the $409 million USD of coffee exported from Colombia in 2022, 43% went to the United States A coaster that describes the light, sweet, and floral flavors of Colombia coffee and shows that 89% of Colombian exports are whole or ground beans, 9% soluble coffee, and 2% brewed A coaster that highlights that most colombian coffee is handpicked on steep mountainside coffee farms. 96% of which are small coffee farms with <5 hectares. A coaster that describes how Colombia is the 2nd largest producer of coffee worldwide, and the largest sole exporter of Arabica beans. Colombian coffee sells for 2-3 times as much as other types of coffee to its labor intensive growing process.
