Charles Cotton’s Compleat Gamester describes a tables game called verkeer that was popular in England in the 1700s but which originated in Holland.

This fragment of a triktrak or backgammon board with a counter is from Leiden (1425–1475). This type of game was widely known as “tables” in Europe during the Middle Ages; different games were played in different places according to local tastes. ♟️🎲

Today I saw this Roman merels game board, scratched into a tile sometime during the 1-2 century CE, in the Narbo Via museum in Narbonne, France. It came from Jonquières, and the pieces/dice displayed with it are from other sites.
