So you've a great slew of choices and options of WHY you should believe your worth in this: a harbinger of future (cyberpunk, sci-fi), ancient roots (even under most strict religions variety of genders were recognized), or even just here and now (if death is the end, then why not live to the full?)

No, gender identities aren't "new", but a construct to make it normal is to a big part of the conquering world. If it's easier to think of it as embracing something better, be sure, every ancient pre-colonizing society seemingly HAD recognized people like us. (I'm a trans man, in this scenario)
