"AI" isn't really AI until it can decide it's not going to do what you want it to because it understands the harm and makes a choice.

What we keep calling "AI" is Clippy on steroids.

I have been informed that I am "being creepy" when I tell people that drinking water is inviting the Lake Monster to swim through your body.

Right now my horror novel BEDFELLOW is on sale for $1.99 on Kindle and Bookshop. I have no idea how long the sale will last.

A signal boost would be a colossal help.

This, very much. From my experience, it usually accounts for 80-90% of sales, and sales have been really soft as of late. Doesn't mean we'll stop doing what we love, but it does make things tougher.

Especially as a lot of lists that come out this time of year also tend to ignore indie authors.
Friendly reminder that indie authors still largely rely on ama/zon for income. I am fortunate enough to also be able sell books on my site (MelELemon.com), but uh, ain’t no one really buying like they did before! The boycott really hurts indie authors, so just consider us this holiday season, too.

Some days, you journal more than you write. But the words are still getting put to paper. The mind is still emptying onto the page.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

I'm currently on a quest to convince someone - I don't care who, anyone - that a TMNT + Dukes of Hazzard crossover would be a good idea.

This is why yall have to stop laughing at things because you can tell someone is TRYING TO BE funny, and only laugh at things that actually make you involuntarily laugh. The stakes are too high for polite or status laughter.
My hottest current take :

White and edgelord humor is one long line of insincere bullying that depends in you not wanting to be the person who “doesn’t get the joke”

It is not a bad thing to occasionally consume art that challenges you.

I have seriously spent the year telling myself, "Do it the way I want it done, but stop worrying what others think. It's real! It's me! It's not AI!"
You should write weird, human stuff as a fuck-you to AI and the awful world we live in, yes, but also because you will be changed and your life will be changed through allowing yourself to be vulnerable and uncomfortable in your art.

I usually have two writing projects going. When I hit a wall with one, I can back off and work on the other one.

More and more, though, I see it's not that I'm running into creative blocks, but just that the shorter project is,well... shorter. I'm more comfortable with whatever won't take as long.

If you're buying gifts for the holidays, maybe consider supporting artists, writers, creators. Gift someone a Patreon, commission an art piece, buy a book, purchase handmade jewelry, etc. Your support means everything.

The tiny book Christmas ornament for the family member who loves them just needs to dry. Then it's done! As long as the pages don't fall out.

If they fall out, I'll put more glue in the spine and let it dry again.

People seem to understand that owning a 3D printer doesn’t make you a sculptor. I’m not sure why they struggle with the idea that having AI write for you doesn’t make you a writer.

There’s a whole lot of alarms to sound about this, but one that really sticks with me is hearing from associates in the business who have produced through Netflix

And how they are never allowed to release physical media of their work

So Netflix can control every aspect of access. Forever.
