Talent alone will get you pretty far—maybe even across the finish line! But your work ethic will be what sets you apart from every other artist in the field. Keep showing up!

You cannot control how many social media followers you have. You cannot control how many books you sell. You cannot control what people think about your art. All you can control is the work. Focus on that.

You may not have achieved your biggest creative goal(s) yet, but you’ve definitely made progress. Celebrate the little victories!

A dear friend of mine recently passed, & at his funeral I saw so many people who were affected by his kindness. I’m sure he was unaware of how much he was loved. That’s the beauty & sadness of a life well-lived. You may never know how many folks you’ve inspired. You can only hope that you have.

Some of us make art that is edgy and loud. Some of us make art that is warm and quiet. Some of us make art that runs the gamut between those extremes. All of these “artistic volumes” are needed.

Whenever I feel frustrated by what I haven’t yet achieved, I think about how my 16-year-old self would be PSYCHED OUT OF HIS MIND by all I’ve accomplished.

If you’re a creative person who struggles with depression like I do, you probably doubt your ideas A LOT. Don’t do that (easier said than done, I know)! If an idea excites you and you can’t let go of it, stop thinking about the negatives and press forward. Doing the work will build confidence.

My graphic novel series has not been selling as well as we hoped, which really sent me into a spiral when I first learned the news. But I’m proud of what I’ve created, and I’m moving forward with the mentality that it’s just the beginning of a larger body of work that’s yet to come.

Today, I’m grateful I had some time on my lunch break to work on a graphic novel pitch and I got some solid pages written.

It’s taken me a lot of years, but I truly am thankful for my journey. Even the ugly parts that embarrass me. Everything has brought me to this present moment, and I like who I’ve become.

When I was a kid, I used to draw myself as a basketball player. I had all these drawings of me jumping through the air like Michael Jordan wearing my school’s colors. The truth is, I was a terrible at basketball. But in my comics I was awesome. And that’s why art is so rad. Anything can happen!

You have worked through every creative block life has given you so far. What makes you think you won’t get through this one?

DO ME A FAVOR: share a comic, drawing, photo, piece of writing, etc. that makes you smile.

ARTISTS: What are you thankful for?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given (and I’m sure you’ve heard it):

Done is better than perfect.

We know to be grateful for the resources and environments that allow us to make art. But also be grateful for yourself for having the guts to make art and show it to people.

Gonna miss you, Rusty. You were one of the best dudes I ever knew.

During a conversation today, a friend made an offhand comment that sparked a really fun idea. This is what happens when you exercise your creativity. Inspiration can (and will) come out of nowhere!

Dig out one of your old sketchbooks from high school. Admire what you were attempting. Cringe a little. Appreciate how far you’ve come.

Finally got around to starting Stranger Things Season 2 last night.

Art is humanity. The reason you have a favorite author, favorite band, favorite cartoonist is because they create stuff that taps into your feelings and experience and worldview. We’ve cheapened art, but its effect on our lives is invaluable.

It is a privilege to create art. Be grateful for it.

Being a professional artist requires that you show up even when you don’t want to draw or write. Whether you’re a pro or not-yet-pro, the best time to practice “showing up” is right now!
