It is New Years Eve in 1947 in London and hundreds of men and women are dancing in the Joint Forces Club on Wardour Street.
A beautiful photograph capturing an extraordinary time - the first few years of peace as the world grappled with the immediate aftermath of WW2.

Queen Caroline was loathed by her husband but gained widespread popularity with the public. When she died in 1821, the gvt was so afraid of riots, they tried re-routing the funeral procession from her Hammersmith home to avoid central London.

This is Queen Caroline’s funeral procession from Hammersmith. She lived by the river, estranged from her husband, King George lV. The procession included an incongruous medley of charity-girls and Latymer-boys, strewing flowers in the mud “(Image from Wellcome Institute)

St Luke’s Church in Chelsea was consecrated on the 18th October 1824. The nave, 60ft high, is the tallest of any parish church in London and the tower reaches a height of 142 feet.
Here it is in a photograph taken in the 1890s for a magic lantern slide.

Rescued from the bombed ruins of Holland House in Kensington are 8 extraordinary handwritten ‘dinner books’, a record of the 77,000 names who dined there from 18 May 1799 – 11 April 1806. This was an influential salon for some of Europe’s most influential people to meet.

Paddington Station was an important milk depot. The population of London in the 19th century grew rapidly and farms were increasingly outside the city. By the 20th century over 3,000 milk churns were handled at the station every day.
This photograph was taken in around 1905.

Using expert graphics artists and printers as well as embroiderers; this smal corner of Shepherd’s Bush spearheaded an artistic movement that shaped the public campaign of the Suffragettes. It influenced similar international campaigns. And ultimately helped women gain the vote.

1720 map of St Paul’s church parish, Covent Garden. Covent Garden gets its name from having once been walled off land owned by Westminster Abbey for use as arable land & orchards, referred to as "the garden of the Abbey and Convent", and later "the Convent Garden".
