Twice or thrice had I lov’d thee,
Before I knew thy face or name;
So in a voice, so in a shapeless flame
Angels affect us oft, and worshipp’d be;
Still when, to where thou wert, I came,
Some lovely glorious nothing I did see.
Which lines of poetry live rent-free in your head?

i do admire this paper for its ability to track the exact lines of thought i had when i was ten years old and deciding not to be christian. not sure that it's useful for a philosophy paper to do that but it's at least interesting to see that lewis and ten year old me were on the same page about hell
still crazy that there’s a posthumous david lewis paper about how the (standard) christian god is evil and so by extension (standard) christians are evil

finishing up a paradigm me-style first draft of a paper. like 60 pages, of which 10 is about clowns and 50 is about metaphysical modality, and which includes this heinous stretch of words:

starting to be convinced that most of the AI-induced automation that has any shot of serious uptake was already stuff that could be done without AI (like self checkouts at target and ordering kiosks at mcdonalds). if the customer interactions are more complex than a midsize flowchart it won't work.
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."
Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

here students can see the historical grade averages for previous iterations of the class and if you're grading even 1-2% lower than that number the students go absolutely ballistic and start challenging every grade. that average btw is always like an A-
My uncle is leading some sort of “wtf is going on” inquiry at UT Austin and would confirm this thread, with the added complications that

1) profs who fail students get bad reviews
2) profs who fail students get yelled at for eliminating tuition money
3) profs who 1) and 2) get fired
We're seeing possibly the worst attendance in history. Even in creative writing classes, where students generally want to participate and have their voice heard--they're not showing up, ignoring guidelines and feedback, and either describing expectations as "unclear" or simply refusing to comply.

i showed my students fleeing ghost the other day (promise it was relevant) and i was, as always, surprised by people's reactions to that painting. i need to find some excuse to teach aesthetics or something. i love teaching philosophy but eliciting hot takes about art from undergrads is also so fun

i miss drew, who never got to know all of who and what they were

i miss everyone i'll never meet because other people's bigotry fear and smallness left no place for them in the world

i miss everyone i never would've met

they all deserved better, because all it is possible to deserve is the best

the "merely" here is interesting. i feel like whether contrastivism is inflationary or deflationary, or otherwise is the more content-heavy sense of [thing discussed], varies wildly between disputes. i guess whether or not being by contrast is "mere" is a notion that is what it is by contrast.
for there is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast

this isn't exactly right but not exactly wrong either. share of americans who live alone is at peak, but share of young americans living with "roommates" is *also* up. how is this possible? increases in both are offset by fewer married couples living together, since people get married later.
Okay I'm going to flag this not to dunk on Sandra but because I want to point that one major driver of increased housing costs is that young people today are MUCH more reluctant to have roommates than in the past. I personally know a number of folks who just refuse to consider it!
A loan and because I was a young woman my dad had to co-sign and the car was $2500. My apartment was $200, my share $100, heat and electric included. No IPhones, computers and other must have expensive tech. Once the gas went crazy high from .35 to over .52 sold the Mach and bought a VW bug.

A key figure in US politics that I think a lot of European observers obsessed with MAGA voters haven't really got their heads around is your average boring middle class suburban voter who in the face of incomprehensible reactionary chaos hankers after a Normie Revolution.
