I grew up as the only child of a profundly deaf Mum. She always struggled to pronounce consonant clusters so 'satsumas' were 'statue-mers' and 'skittles' were 'stickles'. I'd sometimes hear the correct pronunciations and feel sorry for the poor people who didn't know how to say the words properly!
