I do not think studying the humanities is some sort of magical antidote to evil - Peter Thiel exists - but I absolutely do think our cultural values around math and our fertilization of any skill set that makes money above all else are just way out of balance

obviously this is bad, but it’s long been true of other countries we praise to the skies for their healthcare and a lot of progressive Americans don’t want to acknowledge that as a huge vector of oppression. there are a lot of places I couldn’t emigrate to even if I wanted bc they have BMI limits
Obesity's now on the list of considerations, as well as cancer, & mental health, that may result in denial of an immigrant visa.

"Those who suffer from these medical conditions could become a “public charge,” & drain the nation of its resources, the directive argued."

State Department to allow denial of immigrant visas to those with health issues, including obesity
US State Department guidance could deny immigrant visas for health conditions like obesity.

I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

RIP Edmund Fitzgerald, died on this day 50 years ago. Killed by a witch I think? She made him swim lake Superior carrying iron ore. Pretty stupid, I wouldn't fall for that

I really hope to one day internalize the lesson that two people can have vaguely similar names and still not be the same person. Today is, unfortunately, not that day.

Donate money to a food bank or food pantry, then give your extra cans and boxes to a mutual aid org, love fridge, free pantry, etc. in your neighborhood.

Money in formal channels takes advantage of scale, and whatever you can spare in informal channels reaches more neighbors.
spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"

“What these pundits are nudging us to do, ever so politely, is accept that women, in the main, are accustomed to being a little degraded, a little underpaid and ignored and dampened in their ambitions, in ways that men are not and never will be.”

This is a hell of a piece. Read it.

Changes in the economy and in the culture seem to have hit them hard. Scott Galloway believes they need an “aspirational vision of masculinity.”

Yeah, the arbitrary mod decisions around here are a huge problem.
I get they don't want to litigate every suspension but when they suspend completely anodyne accounts who aren't going around suggesting we firebomb Walmarts or calling people slurs or whatever, what are we supposed to think?

I thought about it, and I’m still going to vote because I would personally feel bad not using that tiny piece of power to do some harm reduction for marginalized people. But I’m going to use all of my energy and attention for more direct activism and support in my community, not campaign bullshit.
Yeah, this might’ve been the thing that broke the camel’s back and cured me of electoralism. After they start off the administration by unanimously confirming one of his nominees, refusing to deny unanimous consent on anything, caving on the CR in March (giving ICE their current funding), then this.
anyway if dems think I'm gonna forget this shit in 5 months, they're wrong. if they think I'm gonna forget it in 5 years, they're wrong. they have fully convinced me that purging the party of these inept losers in the senate is more important than retaking the senate in the next election cycle

Okay sorry I just want to say that it's a pretty clear sign both of how devastated the media landscape is and how hard it has especially hit women that we are not INUNDATED with cool writing at every single outlet about Silksong and WOMEN

I am kind of sitting here mouth agape as I realize that the thing that really got eight Democrats to cave was a provision which provides backdoor criminal and civil immunity to them personally by making it functionally impossible to ever investigate the Senate
read the actual bill text and this is quite literally a provision designed solely to impede civil and criminal investigations into United States Senators and their staff. www.appropriations.senate.gov/imo/media/do...

I waited a day to say this bc I respected everyone's right to vent some anger, but *remember to focus on what you can do*. Whether it's defending your community, taking action around what you've been venting about, whatever — but don't let all of your energy get captured in the social media space.

Rick Scott was CEO of a large, for-profit healthcare company called HCA. While Rick Scott was CEO, HCA stole so much money from Medicare they were fined $1.7 Billion.
Rick Scott told me his plan would be to take all of the remaining ACA subsidies and redistribute them to HSA accounts and people can then buy whatever insurance a state certifies. Basically a repeal/replace.
He denied when I asked wouldn’t that create two-tiered system where sick pay much more…
