Yeah the "seeds of disease" idea was mid 1500s iirc and the first proto germ theory I am aware of that actually addressed the idea of contagion without a heavy dose of mysticism (humors, miasma, etc.). Variolation first use is frustrating: sometime between hundreds of years B.C to 1600s, why not!?
