Well-fed wildlife 💚

With plenty still in flower and plants full of seed for later in the year, wildlife will have plenty of food at #LowerSmiteFarm this autumn and winter 🐝🐦💚

Artichoke galls are caused by a gall wasp laying an egg on an oak bud. Have you spotted one recently? 👀

There will be disturbance at The Flashes #UptonWarren this coming Wed-Fri whilst our contractors undertake essential maintenance. The work, which is weather-dependent, will take place c9.30am-4pm. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not head out to look for galls on leaves. Galls can be caused by wasps, fungi and other organisms - like the sawfly that has caused these galls to form on willow leaves.

A gall is an abnormal growth that a plant produces in response to another organism

It's so hard to get any work done when you work for a Wildlife Trust* ... you go to see another colleague in a different building and before you know it, you're slow-worm watching 😍😁

*we promise that we do work hard, it's just that we're easily distracted by Worcestershire's fabulous wildlife 💚

3 cheers for this amazing painted lady butterfly; despite having lost a hind wing, it still managed to fly off strongly...go butterfly 🦋🤩💚

#DidYouKnow that painted lady butterflies migrate south but fly at speeds up to 30mph and above 500m, out of sight of humans but picked up on radar 😮
A painted lady butterfly with only three wings - it's missing the hindwing on the right side. The wings are patterned in orange, black and white.

Our Wildlife Sightings volunteers love receiving records of wildlife you spot.

Thx to Gillian Bennett for letting us know about a group of 4 glossy ibis she & her husband spotted...just a handful of the 600+ glossy ibis recorded in the UK this month 😍

4 glossy ibis feeding in shallow water. The birds have long legs, long necks, curved bills and iridescent plumage that makes their wings look metallic green in colour

Good guess but it's a wigeon...it's in eclipse plumage and will soon be moulting into the much more colourful breeding plumage.

Did anyone else think that the weekend whizzed by quickly? 😁

Welcome to a new week and today's #MysteryMonday. We'll be seeing many more of these as autumn turns to winter...what duck was peeking at our colleague Ion at #UptonWarren last week? 🤔
A mottled brown duck with its head tucked into its wings - one eye appears to be looking at the camera. The photo is taken from behind and we can see the white undertail feathers that have brown spots throughout.

Is it just us or is it a bumper conker year this year?!

Did you know, though, that horse chestnut trees aren't native?

Take a Sunday morning delve into the world of conker trees with our seasonal blog 👇

Migrant hawkers are often found hunting for prey along woodland edges or hedgerows so our volunteer Brian Iles was delighted to find this pair closer to home.

No matter where you are this weekend, keep a lookout for the unexpected wild 👀🐦🐝🐞🦋🦎

Our colleague Ion caught this gathering of swallows on the lines at #LowerSmiteFarm this week - beautiful to see so many but sad to know that they'll soon be leaving us for winter 💚

We see bees, wasps, butterflies, birds & more but what wildlife sees in #heathland habitats is a mix of bare earth, hollow stems, tussocky areas & bases of plants in which to nest & overwinter.

We're so proud of everyone who's helped us start the restoration of #GreenFarm, next to #Monkwood nature reserve. The impact for wildlife will be huge - new habitat, new corridors and plenty of space to expand 🌳🌼🦋🐝🐦🐭🐞🐜

Thank you everyone 🙌👏🙏
