You know a country by its values. By what a country values. And it turns out thatwhat a country values can change overtime. Sometimes, though, there's a sort of cognitive delay between the country you think you are in, and the country you've actually become. For example, you can keep selling yourself, to foreigners, as the country of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen, and luring busloads of tourists to Stratford-upon-Avon and Bath, and put a statue of George Orwell in front of the BBC, and imagine yourself a cultured and literate nation, which the rest of the world admires for its devotion to the written word - but if you then chronically underfund your cultural institutions, and treat your cultural workers with contempt, many people will suspect you of being full of it. And as the decades pass - and fewer and fewer Shakespeares and Austens and Orwells emerge from your little island - even more people will begin to suspect that in truth you do not value culture at all, and are in fact running a giant heritage museum in which the only cultural workers you respect are the dead ones.

Exact same #WorldofWarcraft test outfit/character as yesterday. Since at this point I'm looking at what I can do in terms of photography, rather than try to nail a visual design.
Pretty much the Same World of Warcraft picture as yesterday, so same alt text applies. But in this test the character is over a white background, and the colours, lighting, contrast and apparent resolution are way crisper and nicer.

Just realised that the transmogs in #WoW 's Legion Remix are free.
A World of Warcraft showing a slim, elfin Demon Huntress in red, black, dull gold and maroon light leather armour. It's an odd mix of baroque and sleek, and looks pretty tough. The hero piece is the hooded faceplate with an upper face mask that is a bizarre mix of cat and owl face, plus lining underneath that makes it look like the face has a huge, Joker-like-by-way-of-Eldar-warrior grin.

If nothing else, do it for War Nurse.
Early 1940s comic book art depicting a young white woman in an odd, sportive costume with a nurse-themed mask slash tiara. With one energetic punch, she's shattering a giant Nazi swastika. The obscure "War Nurse" logo is drawn in the background.

Image didn't import *again* 😾, so here's Razer's (IMO) best costume :
1990s comic book art of a female character in a skintight lavender super-costume, with a few black, red and metallic accessories and a three-band motif on the biceps and thighs. She has long reddish-blond hair and a stylised mask covering her upper face then rising high as if it were two horns.

Also, I think Bluesky fails to fetch the remote image when the URL is too long. Or at least that's the most discernible commonality when pics don't show up.

The image should be :
1970s super-hero comic book drawing. Closeup on the face of a white man yelling a warning. He's wearing a blue spandex costume with a yellow insignia on the brow (looking a bit like two downward arrows) and some sort of slim, vaguely insectile yellow googles. He looks kinda bitter and evil, which he is.

I saw this and post a redhead.
Fairly realistic digital art of the face of a young woman. She pas pale-ish skin, freckles, sharp but regular features, straight red hair framing her face in somewhat messy strands, some sort of pseudo-Norse tattoo on her lower lip, and weirdly pale grey eyes. Her face is expression-free, even a bit vacant.

The series is full of nifty WW pictures, though some make it obvious that my eye for hues ain't the best-calibrated.

Best part is, all these images will end up in shitty "TOP TEN SUPER-HEROES WTIH AWESMOE RACK" listicles on AI-generated sites, making way more money than we do ! Yay ! 😺✨
Gorgeous Nicola Scott art of DC Comics' Wonder Woman, from a 2010 cover. She's flying up in a dynamic pose seen at a high angle. The style is a lightly stylized comic book realism, and WW looks majestic, beautiful and radiant. In part because I tend to crank up the vibrance since all y'all keep looking at our illustrations on tiny smartphone screens in bad conditions.

Gorgeous Nicola Scott 2010 art of Wonder Woman, with background removed to focus on the character. She's seen from a high angle, looking up defiantly as she's clearly about to choose violence. Diana's features are more Mediterranean than in most takes, her costume is cut in a more practical way, and she's clearly using the best shampoo in the universe.

Ah, found an old photo of my Shepard whilst cleaning stuff up. Her #MassEffect 2 model is the one that worked the best - the auto-port to ME3 was a bit off

The eyes were a small home-cooked Gibbed hack using negative values, to turn them into very faint light sources. It's particularly visible here
My version of Cdr Shepard from the Mass Effect 2 video game. A striking young woman in a black and white sci-fi naval uniform. She is of heavily mixed heritage with jet black short hair, golden brown skill, mostly Asian eyes and a mostly African nose. She's looking straight at the camera with a tough, somewhat annoyed expression. Her eyes are of a probably impossible, highly reflective grey-silver colour.

Sub-€50 #Steam haul for the Summer sale.

In case somebody needs inspiration for small, cheap, well-reviewed, indie video games that have enough meat on them for writeups.

(Though yes, Sword and Fairy isn't "indie").
The games are Red faction Armageddon, Erannorth Reborn, Planet of Lana, Powerslave Exhumed, ADACA, Sword and Fairy 7 plus the dreamlike world DLC, Gerda a flame in winter, indemon tales, and Harvest Hunt. They range from about €2 to €9 at current sale prices.

Back in the days I used #DarkSouls for our Jet Foundling #baldursgate 1 character

It was a way to photograph a badass dark fantasy fighter in full plate with a big-arse shield. Since the BG1 vintage sprites weren't gonna work as illustrations

But now I fear that Faraam armour is too recognisable
Fantasy medieval warrior in heavy plate armour, wielding a huge thick shield and an indeterminate melee weapon. One spaulder has a vertical plate rising from the head side. Draped over the armour are a sort of shawl and open skirt in a thick, dark red fabric with gold trim motifs. This person, of indeterminate gender, looks like a badass tank.

For the Steam spring sale, a small, low-cost and quite niche selection.

Most of this stuff is old (except Jupiter Hell) and now obscure. But it's good material for unexpected character write-ups and small bits of gaming history...

... assuming I ever have time to play games, of course.

In yet another "yes yes grandpa, time for bed now" moment, I still like my old Fallout 3 modded-to-the-gills video game screenshots.

Uncharacteristically happy with this one. It looks unremarkable (that's the goal !) but there's a fair bit of reconstruction and manipulation compared to the original.

And so we have a clear view of the Harpy's special weapon, while preserving most of Aparo's composition and flow.
Jim Aparo art from a Batman story. It shows Harpy (Iris Phelios), clad in a strange orange and green costume with a grotesque theatrical green mask and a long white hair wig. She is using a mechanism that turns her odd chain belt into a flying axe head at the end of a chain, and starts spinning this weapon to strike in anger.

After five years of savings, my third NAS has entered production today. It's been 15 years in the making, but this setup is now approaching my goals in terms of volume and redundancies.

(Though I don't have a trusted distant site to do a genuine 1-2-3 setup).

Before I forget, added a new illustration to our somewhat large series of character profiles for Marvel #Comics' Black Widow (Natalias Romanova).

It's an Alex Ross painting of her 1970s look, which of course near-automatically makes it awesome.

As often with Ross, the painting simultaneously looks photorealistic and like something straight from a comic book. It can't be easy to do that.

Small example below. Back then, a heavily-modded Fallout 3 was the tits. The problem -- and a key reason to wait for a remaster -- was that stability with too many mods on became shite.
