This is Action Comics issue 480 page 8 (1978) by Curt Swan and Frank Chiaramante. Hawkman and Green Lantern are stuck in the JLA satellite fixing extensive damage from the rampaging Amazo Android. Superman was knocked straight out of the satellite into the ocean, but in typical Superman style, he bounces back with panache. Dolphins! He burst out of the ocean in a pod of dolphins, totally ready for summer. Sorry, Lantern and Hawk, you guys are stuck on space duty, no beach for you!

Thor has caught the Loki pigeon in a sack, and then he reverts to regular Loki form. Loki is really freaking out about being in that sack, sounds like that’s how the kids picked on him when he was young. Sorry Loki, next time be less evil. See you next week!

Two can play the trickster game! Blake makes a Thor mannequin to fool Loki into releasing his hammer from the magical forcefield. Oh, yeah, MAGICAL FORCEFIELD! But it was a ruse! Loki buys it and drops the forcefield to see what’s going on, and Dr. Blake leaps in and touches the hammer.💥⛈️💥

Blake has placed the Thor dummy in front of Loki‘s forcefield, to fool him into thinking that Thor has retrieved his hammer. But the trickster got tricked! When Loki drops the forcefield to see what’s going on, Dr. Blake rushes in and transforms back into Thor. Now you’re in trouble, Loki! Dad‘s gonna hear all about this!

More pigeons!🐦Loki is in New York so he wants to blend into the crowd. He transforms himself into a pigeon to fool Thor. I’m starting to think Kirby has a problem with pigeons. He must be one of those “flying rat” types. Loki escapes to terrorize the city with his illusions and mischievous magic.
Loki wants to escape Thor and further terrorize New York, so he transforms into one of New York’s most populous residents, a pigeon! Once he’s in the flock, eating dirty crumbs off the street, there’s no way to tell them apart. Loki escapes again.

Loki watches Thor struggle with the electronically treated chains from the REDS last issue, and realizes that he needs to separate Thor from his hammer to have a shot in this fight. Little brothers are always so sneaky! Next problem, how does he get past his captor? How about turning into a snake and slithering right through their legs? You 0 for two now, Heimdall. Two hunters have found Warren‘s mangled corpse, and call in the police. They’re all horrified at the grizzly scene, and call in the poor widow, Gerda, to break the bad news. BOO HOO! Gerda forces out some crocodile tears, as the police get their identification of the rat-chewed, water-logged body. It’s a crying shame, right? Right? See you next week!

You still with me?👀Man, this is going hard for 1954, right?😅Warren is left with no arms and legs but this curse is driving him to find water.🔥He crawls to the railing and rolls into the ocean. GLUB GLUB GLUB.🫧His burn abates as his heart stops.☠️Gerda‘s magic whisks his body to the car crash scene.🚗
Windbag Warren gets his wish. Water! With no arms and legs, he manages to drag his body to the railing, and thrust himself over the edge into the ocean. Sweet relief as the mounting pressure of the ocean collapses his lungs and stops his heart. That was quite a curse, Gerda! Tough, but fair. Her magic spell continues as his body transport to the car crash scene, rats and all. Two passerby’s find his rat-gnawed corpse next to the car wreck. Are we sure this was 1954? Jeez!

Looks like old Gerda is a witch!🧙Hoo boy, did Warren pick the wrong lady to abuse! Demons chain Warren to the floor as Gerda brands him with a cursed 3rd eye. The pain can only be quenched with water!👁️🔥And the rats enter the chat.🐀And chew off his arms and legs!🤢I did say EXTREME TORTURE, didn’t I?😉
Gerda’s revenge! After years of abuse at the hands of Warren, Gerda finally turns the tables. She has her demon minions chain him to the floor, as she tells him how it’s actually going to go. Your bad guy exposition was wasted, sorry Warren. She brands him in the middle of his forehead with a cursed third eye that is doomed to feel pain until you quench it with water. And then, aw rats! No, really, rats. Rats come in and gnaw off his hands and feet, for some pretty crazy torture for 1954.

Warren sprints for his lovely midnight cruise, free of his poor wife.🚢He goes to his cabin and lays down to sleep the deep sleep of the guilt-free evil. But someone’s gonna have some night terrors. WAKEY WAKEY!⏰ Gerda sachays into the room with a monster cohort. Oh, you’re gonna get yours, Warren!🍽️
Warren is sprinting to make it to the ship on time, and just gets on board before they set sale. All aboard! He goes to his cabin and lays down to sleep, unburdened by guilt. Well, he’s about to be burdened by something else! Gerda strolls into the room with monsters that drag a shocked Warren out of his bed. Oooh, this comeuppance is gonna be nasty!

While they’re in the car on a hairpin turn, Gerda enacts HER plan. HYPNOSIS!😵‍💫👀Next thing, Warren comes to in a puddle of water next to a firey wreck. The smug bastard does a happy dance when he thinks Gerda is dead or burning in the wreck. He sneaks into the back of a truck to get to the cruise.
The reader has the view of someone in the backseat as Warren and Gerda drive away, as he enacts his murderous plan. But Gerda has other ideas! And some powers, it seems. She hypnotizes Warren, and while we see the car crash, we only see Warren waking up in a puddle next to the crash. He clearly thinks she’s either dead or dying, so he flees the scene. Nearby there is a truck with a flat tire, and he quietly sneaks into the back of it, realizing it’s heading into town towards the docks. He thinks he got away with it all, let’s see if it’s true.

Bad guy exposition time!🥱Why do evil windbags always give up their plans to the victim? Lucky for the victim I guess.🗣️🙄Warren ties up Gerda and tells her that he’s going to get on a cruise ship as an alibi and she’s going to die in a car “crash.” Now I’m kinda looking forward to the EXTREME TORTURE🍿
Warren stands menacingly over Gerda as she lies prone on the ground. Warren goes full bad guy and decides to go on a long exposition about his plan. He explains that he’s going to be on a cruise at midnight, and he’s going to put her in a car and crash it, but change the clock, so it looks like she crashed while he was on the midnight cruise. I think we all want to see this guy get it now.

Warren is trying to steal his wife’s cats eye ring to feed one of his many addictions. He is being nasty and calling her names and she is desperately pleading for him to stop and calling him names right back. Then he decides to hit her. Unlikable character activated! Narrative arc, do your dirty work.

This the cover to Weird Tales of Suspense and Horror - The Thing number 14, drawn by Steve Ditko. The concept of this comic was horror stories told by a creature called The Thing. Man, they went really hard in horror comics in the 50s. Well, until the Code. Demonic monsters fly around the cover, tearing at a poor woman. She is left broken on the ground as an extreme close-up of the demonic creature stares at the viewer. This was the last of the pre-Code horror comics, and boy did it go hard.

After pulling his 98 pound weakling trick, Thor surprises his communist captors. A couple quick taps of his hammer on the ground, a plea to Odin, and bye-bye communist base. A wild storm forms, and blows away all the walls, and the Communists. The day is saved, the scientists are freed, and Thor is victorious. THORSDAY! HUZZAH!

Clever Thor!🧐A weakness is a strength. And now every 98 pound weakling on a beach getting sand kicked in their face is going to start praying to Odin. Give me the beef, Allfather!🍔Thor finds the weakness of the electronically treated chains, and then you know what happens…🔨⚡️😵! Gird yourselves, Reds!
You can still see the silhouette of Thor that was wrapped in the chains, but he’s relinquished his hammer and turned into Dr. Blake, 98 pound weakling, in order to slip out of the chains. But he won’t be weak for long, because he’s touching that hammer and feeling that old beefy thunder again. Time to put the hammer down!
