Hi 👋
Just starting to explore Bluesky. I have separate Insta accounts for my fossils and photography but this is going to be more of a mishmash of those and anything else that grabs my attention. Based in Dorset, UK & fascinated by nature

A recent bucket-lister find😀. A Green Huntsman (Micrommata virescens) female guarding her egg sac 💚.

Luckily, she'd made her retreat under some bracken and I could turn it over without causing any damage.

Amazing creatures 🙂. Thanks for the info - I'd heard about the formic acid but assumed it was from the tubes that extend from their 'tail'. I can see the slit below their head in the photo.

Thanks Vanna. I couldn't believe my luck when I realised what it was!

A mystery egg I found in my garden a few weeks ago hatched and grew into this amazing Puss Moth (Cerura vinula) caterpillar😃.

Hi James. These were with the OM System 90mm macro. I previously used a Laowa 100mm macro on my Canon EF set up which was a great lens although all manual.

Successful hunting for these two Thomisus onustus from Dorset. I love the variation in colour of these spiders - everything from white, through various shades of pink, deep burgundy and purple or even bright yellow🩷🤍💛💜

I've been waiting for the rain to fill mine up so I can finish the edges. Immediate impact on biodiversity! First pondskater a couple of days ago. Today - mosquito larvae, two water beetle species, a water boatman, damselflies and a Broad-bodied Chaser 😀. No plants yet so just a big puddle really!

Look who I found hiding in a rhododendron flower on the heath a few days ago 💚🌸 I was looking for Heather Crab Spiders, but this little scene was a welcome bonus.

It takes a few days to change but still a neat trick.

Thanks 👍I think she got an injury while catching prey and it hasn't healed fully.

Misumena vatia colour change. Two weeks after I posted this yellow spider, I found her again on a nearby bramble flower where she'd turned white. The red markings remain unchanged.

A rather special 'rhubarb-and-custard' Thomisus onustus spider I found a couple of weeks ago. I haven't adjusted the colours - she really was that bright (see the last pic taken on my phone)

Hi Rosy 👋

Dorset WT just forwarded your email to me. Looks really interesting and I'll be in touch.
wsnatureandfossils.bsky.social
Yes you do. These are quite variable in colour and this one was particularly light. I do wonder whether things look different to flying insects, though, if they're able to see in uv. The colour match may not look right to us but may be spot on for passing bees and moths.
wsnatureandfossils.bsky.social
Hi Tom. Thanks for an idea for the moth. Moths aren't my strong point, but I think you might be right. It's definitely the right habitat.

Yesterday's star find - a beautiful, pastel coloured, Thomisus onustus (Heather Crab Spider). She was sitting amongst the heather with her prey as the sun removed the last of the morning dew.

I'm sure there will be. Too many places to go and not enough time 😂. I was over in Purbeck all day hunting for any early Heather Crab Spiders.

Some nice finds there Paul 👏. Love the tortoise beetle.

Thanks very much, Martine 🙂
