👁️ Privacy through Transparency

As with everything in XMTP, this change will be released in the open. XMTP client code, servers, and data are available to the public. You can read a more detailed security analysis of the feature here.

XMTP was built on the belief that private communication must not depend on trust in any single party, including us.

We believe this architecture aligns with the highest privacy standards demanded by the most privacy-conscious organizations and individuals.

Quantum computing isn’t just sci-fi; it will break the cryptography we rely on for messaging.

While applications like Signal can protect at the application level, there has been no quantum-level secure open messaging protocol for developers.

XMTP is this solution for the world.

As of today, XMTP is now a fully quantum-resistant decentralized messaging protocol.

This means, any developer, anywhere in the world can leverage XMTP to provide their users with private, decentralized, & quantum-resistant messaging.

To build a new communication network that requires global trust, you have to open source everything. True security comes from transparency.

This is why XMTP's node software is open source—anyone can inspect, & verify every line of code. No more blind trust in a black box.

One inbox. Many identities.

XMTP lets users link multiple identities + passkey or crypto wallet to a single secure inbox.

This means any DiD, can link to XMTP and access secure, private messaging with XMTP.

We're officially adding Passkeys 🔑 in May so that XMTP works on:
✅ Any network (inc Sol, BTC, Nostr, Bluesky)
✅ Any identity
✅ Anywhere in the world

No phone number required—just secure, global, decentralized messaging with XMTP. 💬 🔒 🌍

XMTP is more than a protocol, it's a network of apps & identities.

Meaning, the 2.2M identities on XMTP-- across @base, @ensdomains, @LC, @unstoppableweb & FIDs-- can use any app, such as @CoinbaseWallet, @family, or @converseapp_ (+ 60 other apps)

This is true ownership.

XMTP is the first decentralized implementation of the MLS (Messaging Layer Security), built entirely on the IETF's open standards.

🔒 E2EE encryption
👁️ Forward secrecy & post-compromise security
⚡ Efficient scale for large groups
📱 Support for multi-device messaging

XMTP ensures that no government, company, or individual has control.

Our core pillars are:
✅ Secure, audited encryption
✅ Full-stack transparency
✅ Global decentralization

Decentralized messaging means we own & control our messages, the way we own and control our money.

Privacy is under attack.

🇬🇧 The UK made Apple drop ADP.
🇮🇳 India forced a backdoor to WhatsApp.
🇷🇺 Russia & 🇹🇷 Turkey banned Discord.

Centralized systems are breaking down & encryption is not enough.
We need decentralized messaging.

Apps like Coinbase Wallet, Family, and Lens get:

✅ Military-grade encryption on par with Signal
✅ Identity interoperability for ENS, Farcaster, Nostr, @bsky.app & more
✅ Built-in anti-spam protection
✅ Self-sustaining network infrastructure

Decentralized.

“Decentralized messaging is the foundation for a free society.” — Joe Lubin

🚫 No censorship.
🔐 No backdoor surveillance.
🛡️ Owned by you, not a CEO.

XMTP isn’t just a protocol—it’s sovereign communication.

Let’s get real: Your DMs aren’t yours.

Every message you send is hosted on servers owned by a handful of tech CEOs. Jon Stewart nailed it: “There’s not one communication app not controlled by one of six individuals.”

We’re done letting them own our conversations.

Since we began, our mission has never changed:
Build the world's largest & most secure, decentralized messaging network.

Today, with support from Coinbase Wallet, Circle, ENS, Alchemy, @a16z.bsky.social , @masknetwork.bsky.social & Faction VC we're launching the XMTP testnet.
