This is called price discrimination (companies prefer euphemisms like "equity pricing") and we're starting to see it everywhere. Now, with the introduction of tiny screens replacing the shelf price tags in grocery stores, price discrimination can occur in real time, algorithmically. /6

This discrimination also shows up on the wages end of things, most perniciously in the gig economy. For example, on-demand nursing companies get access to their nurse's credit records (ostensibly for background check purposes), so they know how much credit card debt they have. /7

Using that information, the on-demand platform will offer lower hourly rates to those nurses who are carrying more debt on the theory that they're more desperate for work. The same kind of thing happens across the gig economy. /8
