So at the moment I am applying for work and trying to shake the rust off my art skills. For reasons, I may end up offering commissions, but if I do, probably won't be till February.

I really liked that job, some pitfalls notwithstanding. But then I got a manager that for one reason or another made it their mission to have me fired and in August they got what they wanted.

I was hired as a turbine mechanic (I travel to different power plants and work on a crew to perform maintenance on turbines (and sometimes generators), and yes, it's as cool as it sounds.)

Panel 1: The witch has her back to the reader, inferring a change in direction leading back out of the forest. The creature chats to itself, "It's going to be hard, keeping quiet around others..." Panel 2: the creature contines to talk indistinctly as she continues to heac back out of the forest. transition panels inserted here to indicate a passage of time. Panel 3: The witch sits in her home, changed out of her clothes into a light shift, the creature curled up on her lap as she sits at a window and looks out at the dark night with rain pouring down. The window cover is lifted like an awning to keep the rain out. What herbs she's gathered at hanging to dry just inside the window, and a tea set sits on a tray on the windowsill, steaming and evoking a cozy scene. "Fin" is written in small white text in the bottom right corner. A spacer page featuring the creature in three different forms. First as a small dragon with a bowtie, curled around the brim of the witch's hat. Second as a crow staring angrily down at a sheep they are sitting on. Panel 1: "They don't DESERVE- hm?" The creature is distracted from their thoughts by the witch's outstretched hand. Panel 2: words float on the background, the image itself is focused on the newly wrapped bicep of the creature. [You can't travel with that wound] Panel 3: We see that the Witch is writing into the palm of the creature's uninjured hand, lacking the ability to speak. [Stay until you're healed] Panel 4: The creature is almost amused and jokingly replies, "What about a reward? Should I bring you with me?" Panel 5: She replies, [Your presence is reward enough] and looks away shyly. Panel 6: They are taken aback by this, blushing themself and unable to respond. Panel 1: The witch turns away to attend to and pick up her things. The creature sits contemplative in the background. Panel 2: As the witch pulls on her cloak, the creature transforms into a crow and hops onto her shoulder. "Very well, Thank you for your hospitality." Panel 3: The creature changes again, this time to a can and moves to her other shoulder. "Would you prefer something softer?" Panel 4: a close up as the witch reaches up to gently rub the creature's head.

Panel 1: The magic takes more corporeal shape, twisting and rolling into a scroll-like form. Panel 2: She finishes her cast, a magically infused roll of guaze. She smiles, holding it out to show it to the creature. Panel 3: The creature is taken aback, only able to utter "I..." Panel 4: They Harrumph and say "You may approach." knowing they were in the wrong to consider her a threat, but too proud to apologize. Panel 5: She wraps the wound Panel 6: an extreme close up on the creature's eyes, lookingd downward. Panel 7: from the PoV of the creature, looking down on the witch as she gently ties the gauze in place. Panel 1: A clawed hand, trailing gold magic gently touches her chin. Panel 2: The creature has now transformed into a humanoid, turning the witch's head to the side to get a better look at the scar on her neck. They ask her, "Did THEY do this to you?" Panel 3: She blushes, continuing to look away from the creature. They lean in closer and have let go of her chin. "And you stayed..." they say. Panel 4: The creature bites on their claw, angered. "THOSE-! You need to- You should come with me," they say, implying they understand a bit about how witches are usually treated in the communities they're born in. The witch's head is still turned away, but her eyes have turned back to the creature, something they said drawing her attention.

Panel 1: She reaches forward toward the leg. Panel 2: The black creature erupts from the bushes, now taking on the shape of a snaking black dragon. She covers her ears as they shout at her, "I SAID LEAVE!!", the force of their voice shaking down the rain caught in the forest canopy. Panel 3: The creature is startled as she holds her hands up to stop them. Panel 4: We now see what they see, that her eyes that were black now have a yellow hue in the center of the pupils. Panel 1: The witch opens her mouth and gold magic pours out of it, curving and dripping designs take shape reflecting plants. We also see for the first time that the witch has a scar across her throat, which is also now leaking black and gold. Panel 2: The witch continues to cast her spell, the magic seeking her gathering basket and circling around her. Panel 3: a focus on her hand as the magic starts curling itself into shape.

Panel 1: Her feet quickly move through the grass, rain now beginning to fall in thick drops. Panel 2: She worriedly continues to follow the voice, once more indistinct. Panel 3: She turns, trying to figure out the direction it's coming from, and is not looking where she is going. Panel 4: She drops suddenly. Panel 5: She is getting up, having fallen down a short drop/plateau of dirt. Her hat is fallen off and she is upset or annoyed by this detour. Black smudges can be seen on the ground near her. Panel 1: As she continues to sort herself, the voice reappears, an ellipses in the dialogue balloon as if it has taken notice of the presence of the witch. Panel 2: Her attention is brought to the voice as it demands, "WHO'S THERE!!" Panel 3: The witch stands up fully to see hidden within the bushes a large black entity with many yellow eyes staring at her. It says, "ANOTHER HUNTER? LEAVE!!" Panel 4: The witch stares, stunned. Panel 5: Same shot, only her eyes have turned down to look at something below the eyes. Panel 6: a leg, partially hidden in the brush is bleeding back from a rather serious wound that exposes bone.

The entire page is a splash image, meant to be views top down, with the group in the far background, the men continuing their walk away from the forest laid out before us. The old man continues to shout saying, "It would've eaten MORE if I hadn't shot it!". The witch is featured three times in the splash image, first standing at the entrance to the forest, watching the men, then climbing over a boulder and fallen tree. Third we see her hand in the foreground of the image, lifting roots and ferns into view over overlapping images of fungi, flowers and buckeyes, implying that her trip there is to gather materials from the forest. Panel 1: a wide shot of the witch deep in the woods at the base of a tree. Panel 2: she is looking at a root she just pulled up, satisfied with its condition. Panel 3: She is distracted by a faint noise, like a voice with no distinct words, and turns to identify it. Panel 4: A worm's eye view up at her and the tree canopy as the voice calls for help.

A spacer page (as this comic is designed for print as a zine) depicting the woman from the cover in a chemise peering into an empty jar. Panel 1, the witch is exiting her home, we can see from the background that is is a rural setting in the mountains, and that her home sits quite a ways away from the rest of the community. Panel 2: She turns, taking notice of something. Panel 3: She passes by three people in conversation, walking in the opposite direction of her. An older man says, "It ate TWO of my sheep before I scared it off!". A disbelieving smirking man replies, "Scared it? You?" Panel 4: The smirking man says, "It was probably full." To which the old man shouts back, "FULL!?"

Conflict requires things to be at odds and one side is defeated or overcome, which is the opposite of the message of harmony and happiness in simplicity, which is what Aria is. If that is upsetting to you and you require to see conflict in everything, uhm... best wishes.

The story itself makes a point of the "tests" for the trainees being unstructured and secretive- they have no idea they're taking the test (with one exception). They do as they're asked, and then they're given the mantle of Undine and allowed to escort passengers unsupervised.

Akari's entire journey in Aria is about a girl from a technology overridden Earth finding joy and peace in the every day simplicity of her new life. And her happiness that others might call slow or doltish is what infects and brings happiness to them.

If the core of the story is man vs self, then the training and mastering of techniques would be front and center in the story. They are not. There are characters for whom this is a big deal, that is not the case for Akari.

Yes, the character has a goal, but she isn't at odds with her goal or even lacking. Self-improvement isn't conflict, that is just life. As for that goal of becoming Undine, it's background and not front and center. The ones that bring it up are the side characters- she herself is unconcerned.

Aqua/Aria by Kozue Amano is a great story lacking in conflict. Gorgeous illustrations transport you to a planet of water where the city is filled with life, and also represents ruins of an age no one can remember. It's a good read, I highly recommend it to anyone looking to narratively touch grass.

I miss going to Blockbuster, renting from the Foreign Movie section and watching someone paint a picture with light and movement, taking a peek into another world and just being in that space.
