The Brooklyn Nets have 18 players on standard contracts after re-signing Ziaire Williams.

They are roughly $7 million below the $139.2 million minimum team salary floor when factoring in they need to get down to 15 players, likely by waiving three non-guaranteed players.

Last week on Third Apron, I wrote about the updated trade landscape for Giannis Antetokounmpo. I touched on how the Warriors could match his salary in a trade given their impending second apron hard cap.

The same dynamics would apply in a potential trade for LeBron James.
August 22, 2025 at 7:28 PM
The Brooklyn Nets have $22.5 million remaining in cap space after acquiring Haywood Highsmith.

Day'Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams remain unsigned, so they're likely working with less cap space when factoring them.

They'll need to cut two players before start of regular season.
August 15, 2025 at 7:12 PM
The Miami Heat get under the luxury tax by trading Haywood Highsmith.

They need to sign one more player but have enough space to stay under the tax with a minimum signing.

They also create a $5.6 million trade exception.
August 15, 2025 at 7:06 PM
The Warriors need to resolve Jonathan Kuminga’s situation before they complete their other signings.

The contract proposed by the Warriors would allow Kuminga to get a lucrative deal by a new team if traded. That wouldn’t be the case if he accepts the qualifying offer.

I picked up the salary cap 7 years ago just so I could make accurate fake trades.

Never could I imagine the journey it would take me on, and it led to the most rewarding experience of my NBA media career teaching what I love at @SportsBizClass.

I’m looking forward to next year!

Portland Trail Blazers salary cap situation after signing Damian Lillard.

Deandre Ayton agreeing to a $10 million buyout made it possible for them to use the $14.1 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception while remaining under the luxury tax.
July 17, 2025 at 11:18 PM
First updated spending tiers since July 1:

Nets currently have $28.1 million in cap space. They project with $22.1 million if they re-sign one of Day'Ron Sharpe or Ziaire Williams with cap space, and the other with the room mid-level.

Cavaliers now the only second apron team.

New post on Third Apron.

I analyze the Bucks and Suns (likely) respective decisions to stretch Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal and if we could see more teams do “maximum stretches” in the future.
July 16, 2025 at 6:26 PM
The Los Angeles Clippers will need to use the remainder of their mid-level exception ($5.3 million) to sign Bradley Beal to two years, $11 million.

They have enough room below the first apron hard cap for one more veteran minimum signing.
July 16, 2025 at 5:41 PM
Here is the Phoenix Suns 2025-26 cap sheet before and after if they stretch Bradley Beal.

They’ll get slightly over the luxury tax when they get to 14 players, but they’re close enough to get below it later with a trade.
July 16, 2025 at 5:38 PM
The Phoenix Suns will get:

-Under the second apron

-Under the first apron

-Under the luxury tax

-$194 million tax penalty eliminated

-At least $210 million in savings this season

-Trade and spending restrictions unlocked

By waiving and stretching Bradley Beal.

Cole Anthony gave back $2 million in his buyout. The Memphis Grizzlies stretched the remainder over three years, leaving a $3.7 million cap hit through 2027-28, per source.

This left them with $15 million in cap space to renegotiate Jaren Jackson Jr. and re-sign Cam Spencer.
