I don't know if this really Counts but my alter Hyalite read a pair of short stories during our brief stop at the library today and was not super impressed with either of them. Xie wrongly assumed the former was from the cold war so feel free to laugh at her

A brief review of the short story "The Last Word" by a Mr. Graham Greene, who I strongly suspect is what we might call a Catholic Writer and capitalize both words in doing so.

It's a suitably creaky and slowly unfolding story given the subject matter. The prose is tactile and the characterization of its protagonist solid. The twist is nicely set up and executed, but I think in terms of theme it rather overplays its hand as a story. The last line is downright comedic in its abruptness.

It's a very Cold War sort of story.

The next story in this collection is called "The News in English" and it's a horribly maudlin thing about a British man being captured by the Nazis during World War 2 and being forced to read propaganda over the air. Ah, but he uses a secret code to smuggle information back home to his wife, listening in. It's a bit much. Although notably the story mentions the real English-speaking Nazi propagandist Lord Haw Haw, somehow, that was a real guy

I think I about understand Mr. Greene's sensibilities at this point. Still, it was nice to get a little reading in.

these are a series of brief web shorts. They're cute! But they lack the verve of the main series so I wouldn't call them essential or anything. Main draw here is getting to see Dark Flame Master in his prime in one of the episodes.

I think I had entered some kind of free associative symbolic state where Big Shoes were a symbol of prosperity, so if Bocchi from Bocchi The Rock could lead us to a glorious future of Big Shoes Communism where everyone had big shoes, it would be a utopia of sorts.

That at least is my best guess as to reverse engineering the thought process of Loopy Opal.

I think if you really had to boil it down, you could probably sum up "Love, Chunibyou, & Other Delusions" as a show about the stories we tell about ourselves. How those stories change as we grow older, but how we never really stop telling them, despite how much we might protest otherwise.

Of course, its main vehicle for this is the idea of chunibyou itself. A convenient fiction that a lot of anime---especially a lot of anime aimed at the precise audience this one is---fall into is the idea that there is a dichotomy between "escaping from reality" and "confronting your problems." Following on from that, the idea that there is, in the first place, a clean, convenient, and impermeable barrier between the real and the illusory at all.

Chunibyou really seems for a good while like it might follow suit: our main girl Rikka textually uses her chunibyou fantasies as a coping mechanism to avoid really dealing with the death of her father. Simply because of the usual stellar-across-the-board production values, this version of Chunibyou could've still been good, but it would've been substantially less special than what we have here.

For a while, Yuta, Rikka's love interest and our male lead, tries that. He tries to "snap Rikka out of it," to have her act normal so she doesn't worry her family and friends. To the show's credit, it doesn't portray this as a black and white thing---it's not like Yuta has no reason for doing this---but to its even greater credit, it also shows that trying to "be normal" makes Rikka miserable. In doing so, its finale, wherein Yuta's own chunibyou persona the Dark Flame Master returns to liberate his love from the prison he himself inadvertently placed her in, firmly rejects the idea that Rikka might be in any way broken. Strange, maybe, but not broken.

It's a deeply interesting series from the point of view of someone like myself who, you know, practices magic in real life. Even on a very literal level, everything we see here, whether presented as one of Rikka's fantasies or not, is equally fictional. But, it is very important to me that it requires Yuta to connect with Rikka *on her level*, by taking her to the sea and unsealing the Unseen Horizon she's looked for for so long, for things to resolve.

I leave what it says about yours truly that this idea connects with me pretty strongly as an exercise to the reader. The important thing is this: the show fucking rules. I intend to watch, mm, the entire rest of the series as soon as possible. I've got a built-in lazy weekend coming up (I'm gonna be rendered inert from the vaccines I gotta get on Friday), so I've got the perfect excuse.
