Good luck to Paul Nurse as he starts his 2nd term as President of the @royalsociety.org. I hope that, under his leadership, the Society can rediscover the core scientific values it lost sight of in failing to deal effectively with Elon Musk’s breaches of its code of conduct.

Now that the dust is settling, read this excellent thread - the opposite of a hot take - by Watson’s biographer (out in a year or so!) You’ll see how complicated a 97 year life can be.
Okay, here are some first reflections on Watson.
Watson's life is a tragedy, really of Shakespearean proportions. He did not, as most bios will tell you, do one great thing when he was young and then collect laurels for it for the next 60 years. His career arc was unlike any in science.

This simply throws the problem back on peer reviewers for journals & conferences and in my field that system is already fundamentally broken. Many times you need a paper out there before the system slowly grinds. This is understandable but feels so regressive.
arXiv will no longer accept review articles and position papers unless they have been accepted at a journal or a conference and complete successful peer review.

This is due to being overwhelmed by a hundreds of AI generated papers a month.

Yet another open submission process killed by LLMs.

This is a growing problem for cultural archives, heritage databases, social statistics and scientific databases. A number of charities have (wonderfully) been stepping in, but the scale is such that governments and NGOs will surely need to collaboratively work to preserve essential data.

What an admirably clear statement from the Jewish Leadership Council, especially when all of those involved must surely have been dealing with so many other urgent challenges in safety, security and grief + shock today before having this further divisive and distracting intervention to address too.

The thing is, until someone says ‘no’, they’ll keep pushing the limits.
This Israeli government decision to host Tommy Robinson will widen the growing gulf between the Netanyahu government and the British public, including the broad majority of Jews in Britain (3/4 of whom dsapproved of Netanyahu, before this new link to this anti-Muslim racist UK far right convict).

In the last 3 years, I have become disabled. But one of the things I feel ashamed of is that until it happened to me, I was not as aware of disability issues as I could have been. I hope that this month offers the opportunity for us all to reflect further on how we build inclusive structures.

Utterly shameful.
Deeply disappointing. Once again the @royalsociety.org has avoided explaining how *actions* by Elon Musk that clearly repudiate the Society's values are consistent with the code of conduct that Fellows must adhere to. royalsociety.org/news/2025/10...
