My 3 most recent 3.5 star letterboxd reviews (which in Zeetgeest terms translates to 'you know what I acknowledge the weak points but ultimately this fucks' ) #movies
A 3.5 star letterboxd review for 'Alma & the Wolf' 2025 that reads: The special effects and dream/dreamlike sequences are atrociously enjoyable. This movie has heart and ambition and stays true to itself, and I respect that. Did the lead give a phenomenal performance? No. Did the tonal shift towards manic-dark-comedy around the climax match the atmosphere that had been building up until that point? No not at all. Did the main character's motive and driving force feel entirely cliche from start to finish? Yes absolutely. Did the whole movie smush together into a fucking bop though? Hell yeah it did. You could definitely tell where it was headed as things built up, but dammit when it got there (along with so many stylistic choices along the way) it was a simply a vibe. A 3.5 star letterboxd review for 'All the Money in the World' 2017 that reads: An otherwise fantastic movie nearly ruined by Mark Wahlberg's inability to bring a shred of presence to any scene he's in (which thankfully wasn't the majority of scenes, making this watch still mostly enjoyable). It got to a certain point where we were conspiring about what industry favour or bribe took place to get him cast in this at all - he truly brought /nothing/ and the lack of energy or acting ability stood out like crazy amid the other actors. All stars docked specifically for this reason. Christopher Plummer is a powerhouse, great mother/son casting choices, and there are shots throughout that earned audible appreciative 'ooohs'. Some real grade A kidnapping/torture scenes and I'll always dig a miserable depiction of Lima syndrome. This deserves a shot-for-shot remake with the same actors/director/cinematographer/editors but replace Wahlberg with someone real PLEASE. A 3.5 star letterboxd review for 'Sew Torn' 2024 that reads: I like when you watch a movie and feel the love for Wallace and Gromit that went into it. Chuck in some grief heaviness and the inescapability of disappointing your father and you've got a fun little flick. Very enjoyable.

Predator: Badlands was a delightful romp, even with accidentally going to see the latest possible showing and discovering /as the movie is starting/ that it's in 3D.

We love an underdog/runt story, we love a charming little found family dynamic where everyone is very violent and defective/abandoned, we love a built world that feels like Peter Jackson's trench of evil bugs coming to maul you to death. There was great texture and viscosity throughout, a solid score, and enough betrayal to keep you going. To take Predator and go 'yeah, well... what if he was a bit wee and an empathetic failure with sad little eyebrows' and have it work is commendable.'

The Long Walk movie was GREAT coming from a fan of King and a not-fan of fascism. My September letterboxd curse is being broken.
Letterboxd review of 2025 film 'The Long Walk': A wonderfully subversive adaptation that speaks on the brutality and power of resistance beneath a fascist regime that only rewards (or pretends to reward) individualism. The elevation of the original story had me in a chokehold with alternating sweet, desolate, hopeful, and desperate moments The combination and separation of traits and fates from book characters into film versions was a fun treat for Bachman fans that promised differences early on and kept the ending hidden. That kind of uncertainty and hope and fear for the characters on screen added unexpected tension with a heavy-hearted payoff. The early introductions of names to faces was a series of soft gut punches for readers, even with the uncertainty of what would play out on screen for each character. Why'd they have to make Barkovitch so hot. A great watch. A great message. (obligatory total dudefest)

Last night's movie pick 'All We Imagine as Light' was so lovely that it's compelled me to start posting my high letterboxd reviews:
Letterboxd review for 2024's All We Imagine as Light showing a 4.5 star rating, and the following review: A wonderfully weighted film that drops you just within but also just outside these strangers' lives. Love, loss, yearning, and open armed understanding are all explored amid the backdrop of a city that moves with the heat of millions of other heartbeats experiencing the same thing in their own chapters. A beautiful experience that is shot with both care and precision. The minute details of the human experience are captured pore by pore with heartfelt clutter and expression alike.

My current dog (both larger and homelier) LOVES people, and expects that anyone within seeing distance is there specifically to pet and love on her, which means that I'm the one asking strangers if they will pet her, because not a lot of people ask first:

My first dog was a ridiculous little scruffy terrier mix and I'd constantly get asked if people could pet him, which he would NOT allow from strangers, barring the occasional very old gardener who passed his vibe check:
