I finished the final of this piece months ago. Alas I am yet to share it. Seems to be the case with most of my new work. I don’t really know why I am so reluctant to share work these days.

“The Mirror of Galadriel”

A sketch for chapter 7 of the fellowship :)   Getting carried away in the sketchbook as usual but I think with some adjusting and more space, I have a good idea of an illustration for one of my favourite moments from then books.  #sketchbook #lotr #illustration

From the bottom of the image is a shallow stairway path intertwined with tree roots where Frodo Baggins, under a tree-made archway is following Galadriel as she carries a vase of water up to her Mirror. Surrounding the place where her Mirror sits are trees of all kinds within Lothlorién looming and flowing together with elven-made architecture. Through the forest we can see tree-spiralling stairways and safe havens amongst the canopies. Above all the moon sits in a dark sky full and shining, alighting all below her.

A little drawing depicting my favourite moment/piece of dialogue from PJ’s Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring.
The four hobbits, Frodo and his companions, Sam, Merry and Pippin have finally arrived at the village of Bree. Its walls and gate of entry loom over them and their necks creek from looking up, eyes squinting from rain splashing down upon those weary travellers. A squeak from beyond the wall shouts out to them. “Hobbits, four ‘obbits!”. It was time they had better enter Bree and find somewhere warm to rest for the night.

This is an Artwork depicting a real life tree found in Perthshire Scotland. Combined with a whimsical gnome character, a story is born from the tree!

Under the canopies of a gnarled and well grown Beech tree rests a little gnome. He perches his weary head up against the leftovers of the Beech tree’s trunk which seems to have been sawn down. Don’t worry though as this old wonder has many other trunks that grow above our friendly sleeper to allow him to be shaded from the hot sun, still receiving warmth from the beds of mosses surrounding him. His long beard drapes over his belly onto the ground as he lets out faint whistles, snoozing and snoring the day away.

The traditional pencil drawing of our gnome and his resting point is framed with a simple but quite intricate border. The border is in yellow, mustardy greens and has little illustrations on each vertical side depicting each type of common Scottish tree’s seed and leaf. The style of the border is done in a digital-watercolour way.

Time to paint!

This will be an illustration of my depiction of an early scene within the book Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock. A book I wish I read when I was younger! Highly recommend it for those into the fantasy genre or who are nostalgic for times before their own!
