What makes a qubit tick?

I gave a beginner talk at UCLA’s Quantum Device Workshop on how superconducting qubits work—and how to build a basic qubit–oscillator system.

The talk’s now live 🎥👇

Researchers demonstrate error-resistant quantum gates using exotic anyons for computation
The quantum computing revolution draws ever nearer, but the need for a computer that makes correctable errors continues to hold it back.

A new #QiskitMetal book on the #quantum computing device design for newcomers.

My intent when starting Qiskit Metal was to help fuel the fire in the furnace of innovation.

I’m glad to see the ecosystem growing thriving.

🌟 Excited to speak, have played a small advisory board role, and be back here after the last one 6 years ago for the Rochester Conference on Coherence and Quantum Science (CQS-12)!

CQS is special, dating back to 1960, bringing together Nobel Laureates & field pioneers

There seems to be a problem with the git large data storage, I think I ran out of space. I need to find a solution and fix it.

Major update on factoring primes with Shor’s algorithm from Craig Gidney at #Google.
- reduced physical #qubit count from 20e6 to 1e6 to break a RSA-2048 bit key, using yoked surface codes, magic state cultivation and some efficient arithmetic. arxiv.org/abs/2505.15917

How to factor 2048 bit RSA integers with less than a million noisy qubits
Planning the transition to quantum-safe cryptosystems requires understanding the cost of quantum attacks on vulnerable cryptosystems. In Gidney+Ekerå 2019, I co-published an estimate stating that…

I'm often asked if I'll redo the 2019 quantum factoring estimate. Denser storage by yokes, smaller magic factories by cultivation, slimmer approx arithmetic by Chevignard et al… surely the cost is lower now?

Yes, it's lower now.
