we’re not the first people to do collaborative course design or writing, but we hope our contribution sheds some light on classroom power relations and highlights that students are already knowledge producers capable of contributing to pedagogical scholarship 🌻

we use decolonial feminist scholar María Lugones’ concepts of “world”-travelling and playfulness to think through some of the power relations between teacher and students, and how we can work with or alter them (if not entirely eradicate them) /

our article not only reflects on our specific collaborative course experience, it also develops collaboration as a co-authoring method, and points out some of the barriers to recognising students as producers of knowledge in the current academic publishing process /

students are often encouraged to develop their own voices in classroom settings, but less so in the realm of academic publishing. students are often only included indirectly, eg through interviews or quotes from feedback surveys /

we also wanted to carry the collaborative ethos of the course into the evaluation and publication stage - if students can make decisions about how their course runs, they can also reflect on how it worked, and share those insights through publication /
