Hi Bluesky! I create detailed drawings of the natural world, focusing on at-risk species and ecosystems. Prints and original drawings are available at zoekeller.com. My clients include Texas Monthly, The NYT and Hachette. I am always open to discussing new projects! Email: [email protected]
A highly detailed black and white graphite drawing depicting a surreal scene. A snake skeleton with delicate ribs is entwined around a Copperbelly Water Snake, whose grey scaled body is twists in loose curves. Fragile, transparent strips of snake skin float around the snake and skeleton. A colorful procreate drawing depicting five species of turtles found in Woodstock, NY. Clockwise from the top left: Wood Turtle, Spotted Turtle, Eastern Box Turtle, and Common Snapping Turtle. The turtles swirl around one another, some frozen in poses that suggest they are swimming through the air. Beneath the head of the watchful Snapping Turtle, hatchling turtles emerge from soft shells. Hatchlings of each turtle species swim among the adult turtles. The stems of American White Pond lilies weave through the ensemble towards the top of the drawing, where lily pads and white blooms rest. A detailed graphite drawing depicting at-risk species found in the state of Maine. Two orchids bloom across the page: a petite Ram’s-head Lady’s-slipper on the left, and a Showy Lady’s-slipper with two blossoms on the right. A Sedge Wren perches on the stem of the Ram’s-head Lady’s slipper, its tail raised, chest feathers fluffed and its beak slightly parted as if it is mid-call. Slightly below the wren, on the underside of one of the Ram’s-head Lady’s slippers curled leaves, a tiny, dark and shiny Six-whorl Vertigo snail climbs slowly upward, its eye-stalks extended. Below and to the right of the wren, a striped juvenile Black Racer winds itself around the stems of the two plants, its gentle coils resting on the leaves of the Showy Lady’s-slipper, and its head pointed attentively towards the top right, looking at something off of the page. Above the scene, a Twilight Moth flies, its wings extended. A realistic procreate drawing of a male Ruffed Grouse, with its crest, ruff and tail feathers erect in a mating display.

Hummingbirds of the World! Drawn a couple years ago in Procreate.
A colorful, realistic drawing showing 34 species of hummingbirds, flying and perched on floating twigs against a pale green background.

Common Grackle, one of 125 species of birds I recorded in the Zena Woods last year. I loved watching from my studio window as these sassy birds feasted on caterpillars.
A realistic full-color illustration of a Common Grackle, drawn in Procreate. The grackle sits with its back to the viewer, its face and beak in profile, looking to the right. Its claws grip a pale, bark-less end of a large branch. The light is harsh, illuminating the left side of the bird in bright, pale light. The bird’s iridescent purple and blue-ish colors dazzle.

Hello from under a pile of secret sketches. Here’s another one from the archives!
A square, grey-scale square drawing rendered in pencil. A snake skeleton twists in a complicated tangle. Ghost pipes, lichens and Turkey tail fungi bloom from the skeleton. In one of the snake skeleton’s coils, a nest of leaves cradles three baby chipmunks, asleep and curled up. In the bottom right corner, an adult chipmunk faces off with the snake’s skull.

One of my favorite illustrations from the interior of ‘Atlas Obscura: Wild Life.’ This drawing opens the chapter about cities!

#procreate #natureart
A colorful procreate illustration. A snowy owl locks yellow eyes with the viewer as it perches on a pedestrian walk signal. The orange hand of the walk signal is lit up. The walk signal is attached to a thick metal pole. Giant white clover leaves, larger than the snowy owl, swirl in a surreal way around the metal pole. A single white clover flower blooms at the base of the pole, tipping slightly towards the viewer. A black lady beetle with four brilliant red spots is perched on one of the clover leaves.

‘Snakes of Zion National Park.’ I made this graphite drawing after my artist residency at Zion National Park back in 2018!
A complex graphite drawing depicts snakes woven together in a tangled wreath suspended in space. Species depicted: Desert Striped Whipsnake, Ring-necked Snake, Wandering Gartersnake, Gopher Snake, Great Basin Rattlesnake, California Kingsnake, Groundsnake, Nightsnake, Western Lyresnake, Sonoran Mountain Kingsnake, Smith’s Black-heaeded Snake, Mohave Patch-nosed Snake, and Red Racer. A snake skeleton and oval snake eggs - two full, one empty, and one with a hatchling in the process of emerging - float amongst the snakes.

Want to make art in Alaskan mountains, walk across glaciers and maybe see a grizzly bear? Apply to this residency! I did it way back in 2018 and it was an amazing experience.
