The work in the show was made during and about the AIDS crisis in the '90s, and it makes me reflect on the material reality of queer artists that came before me. That soft sculpture speaks as much to power as metal and machinery.

Obviously this work speaks to me on a spiritual level but the first piece in particular hit me In a strange and beautiful place. My mother worked at Ruby's costume company for my entire childhood and the racks of costumes remind me of my nascent desire to be unhuman.

They can and will yank away your healthcare when it's convenient and politically expedient for them, and will laugh at you and generate AI images of you you twisting in the wind. This administration has literal brain worms. ACT UP never ended.

Do not forget that they want you dead and dying now, and purposely forgotten when you're gone. Buried, literally and otherwise. David Wojnarowicz died before I was even born, fighting the same battle. A gleefully cruel government who will spit on you for being a victim of an infectious disease.

Bruce In David's Jacket 🏳️‍⚧️🌷

Acrylic and glow in the dark pigment on burlap

11 x 14 in
A painting on burlap of an anthropomorphic dog from behind, though you can barely see his figure. The composition is dominated by the back of his jacket, which reads "If I Die Of AIDS - Forget Burial - Drop My Body On RFK Jr's Doorstep". There is a pink triangle that sits behind the text, glowing.

One of my biggest pieces yet! Around 78 x 64 inches. This is about a homo bath house in Pittsburgh. Bruce playing some 90s house favorites :3

I sometimes wonder if furry will ever be really incorporated and "understood" by art world academia/markets like other queer thoughts have been. I think it will continue to be something that we make our own pathways for, even if they weave in and out of that quilt.

Press release for "Sharethread" by @zubrovich.bsky.social. "Sharethread" opens August 16th, 5-9pm at whathouse.
Press release for the art show "Sharethread" by Patrick Totally, written by Mark Zubrovich. The show opens August 16th at whathouse, a new art space in Pittsburgh, 177 43rd Street. The body text is to long to fit in the alt text, but the first two paragraphs read as follows:

"The first screamer I saw on the internet predates streaming video: Relaxing Car Drive. A friend says to watch this and look closely, because there is a ghost in it! A car cruises down a serene country road, calming music playing in the background. I’m lulled into the false sense of security provided by professional film-making, advertisement semiotics, and the trust of the person showing me the video. I’m not expecting a ghoulish figure to pop up into frame and scream bloody murder in my face, but that’s exactly what happens. I cry, I throw pillows at everyone in the room.

The first gore I saw on the internet was on YouTube, around 2006. Modeled in the aesthetic of Newgrounds flash animation, it was framed as an anti drunk driving PSA. It told the story of a Hispanic man (most certainly a white teenager doing a Carlos Mencia impression) who gets sloshed at a party and decides to drive home. A crude stick figure getting into a car. An audio clip plays, a sample from some hiphop song like, “Viewer discretion advised there's some disturbing material ahead!” The video pumps the music’s volume and jumpcuts to a closeup of a mangled corpse. A face bruised blue and black, broken into pieces and leaking brain onto the tarmac. I scream, I shield my eyes, I close the internet for the day."

Bruce Starts The Horror/Bruce Peeps The Horror

Oil on burlap, two canvases

2023ish
A small diptych, two paintings on burlap stacked one above the other. One on top depicts an anthropomorphic dog with a mischievous grin, turned away from the viewer but glancing back at them. A fire licks at the back of their head. The bottom depicts that same dog turned around, the color palette shifted from red to blue. The dog stares out into the middle distance past the viewer, a look of shock on his face

BEYOND excited to have this real big Brucie in "Room Party: Furry Art At The Beginning of the World" at Bunker Projects in Pittsburgh.

I did a residency there almost 6 years ago; feels like an incredible full circle moment to have such an important show in this space. A must-see if youre at AC!
