„Unlike the past three Cops, which were held in countries with varying degrees of authoritarian government, the Brazilian hosts are actively encouraging civil society and street demonstration to play a role in this conference.“

Tussles break out between protesters and security at Cop30 in Brazil

Dozens storm venue at climate conference that has encouraged NGOs and Indigenous groups to play unprecedented role in talks There were tussles between protesters and security guards at the Cop30 climate talks late on Tuesday night, when a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people stormed the conference centre in Belém. The Coalition abandoning net zero as the terrifying science is highlighted at COP30 says everything you need to know. Denial runs deep in the Coalition.

This year’s global climate summit is different – but not in a good way
The vibe shift on global climate action has hit the buzz around Brazil’s COP, but the true believers are still there doing work they say is as urgent as ever.

It is getting increasingly interesting... Protesters break into #COP30 Conference venue in Belém. They demand an involvement of indigenous and youth groups in the negotiations. They are not at the negotiation desks and they don't have the lobby power that the fossil fuel industry has 🫤

Torrential rainfall in the Brazilian city of Belem flooded pavements outside the venue for the #COP30 climate talks. Scientists say climate change is making extreme weather events more common.

A large country sending zero official delegates is rare... and a deeply weird choice. Governments opposing the UN climate negotiations usually still send delegates, if only to disrupt the process and limit the outcome. Sending nobody allows other countries to control the outcome.

UN climate summits are part diplomatic negotiation, part climate and energy bazaar. With a clean energy revolution underway in much - but not all - of the world, the talks and sessions outside the official negotiating rooms at COP30 may be as important as what happens inside.
