Update: no progress in vote counts in Honduras since, at 57% tallied, just over 500 votes separated the two candidates officially leading. Pouring gasoline on a combustible political landscape, the US did in fact release convicted drug trafficker and former President, Juan Orlando Hernández. 1/

Just over 500 officially counted votes between the two leading parties. And as has happened before, the official vote count website crashed. This has caused people in Honduras to worry that when the system is restored, the counts may be different— because that happened before. Meanwhile… 1/

6/ all the posturing about the “trend” matters because the official count has been interrupted by computer problems, causing public suspicion of manipulation of votes. The website reporting results was down on Monday. Tuesday the CNE acknowledged some digital vote tallies have not been counted.

5/ As Honduran media note, Nasralla has never accepted vote counts that went against him, this time saying he only would accept official counts “when the trend favors us”. The National party is no better: they claim the “trend” is irreversible.

3/ Predictably, since Trump shares the innumeracy that leads people in the US and Honduras to expect votes to follow an established trend (which would only happen if each tranche counted was a representative sample of all votes) the US President is raging against the delay, further feeding tension.

2/ while portrayed in Honduras as a strange position, the incumbent party, Libre, continues to urge everyone to wait until 100% of the votes are counted to declare the winner. That would actually be the best option: with 43% still to count in a 40-40-20 split race, *any candidate* could pull ahead.

Trump denounces an attempt to 'alter the results' as Honduras claims a 'technical fault'

U.S. President Donald Trump has denounced on Monday an alleged attempt to alter the results of the presidential elections held this Sunday in Honduras, whose tally was halted due to a technical fault, according to Honduras' National Electoral Council (CNE). According to the president, this alleged rigging would carry a high cost, and he urged Honduras' CNE to finish counting the votes: "It seems Honduras is trying to change the results of its presidential elections. If they do, there will be a high price to pay," he said on his Truth Social account. The president says it is imperative that the CNE finish counting the votes, which are at 57.03% of the ballots counted, while the far-right candidate Nasry Asfura and the conservative Salvador Nasralla are in a technical tie, each around 39.9% of the votes.

Remember in May when Trump gave asylum to 17 family members of the Sinaloa cartel after making a deal with El Chapo’s son? And did you know in 2013, El Chapo bribed Juan Hernandez- who trump just pardoned - in exchange for protection in Honduras? I’m sure it’s all just a coincidence.
