Blender 5.0 finally gives us volumetric grids in Geometry Nodes. In this tutorial I build a scalar field ϕ from Gaussians, compute its gradient ∇ϕ, and visualize the vector field with glyphs (arrows)—all inside Blender, no external tools. Who this is for: researchers, engineers, and educators who need clear, publication-grade visuals without bouncing through ParaView/Matlab for every shot. Reality check: this won’t replace domain solvers; it will let you make accurate explainers and animations fast. What you’ll learn What’s new in Blender 5 for sci-viz: Grid sockets, Field→Grid / Sample Grid, Grid Gradient (plus Laplacian/Divergence), Grid-to-Mesh, and a Viewer that understands non-geometry. Domain topology: set voxel size sensibly (aim ~100–200 voxels/axis). Scalar field (ϕ): build one/two Gaussians with Field→Grid. Vector field (v): compute v = −∇ϕ with a safe-normalize (no NaNs at critical points).
