The older I get, the more I realize that mid-90s early issues of Adbusters had the exact right idea about the state of the nation and how things would play out.

If you showed Gen Z a copy of AdBusters, their heads would explode.
(And I'm not absolving Millennials or Gen Xers; we knew about AdBusters and still let our identities become brands.)

anyone who has been voluntarily looking at that volume of advertising has no business on this account. this is an adbusters stan account, this account read naomi klein books at a very formative age and puts $1 in a swear jar every time her children are exposed to branding of any kind

Not a novel observation, but man, if 10 years ago you tried to say something like "President Donald Trump, in the White House's new golden ballroom, shovels McDonald's in his mouth as his mind rots from dementia" they'd definitely be like, "okay, settle down there Adbusters"

Goddamn, bring back existentialism and AdBusters. Make fun of them, pick them apart, but for the love of god we have to start believing there's more than money.

To add context, there is an archive of several years worth of Adbusters in her basement. That may not be normal.

Okay, closing a loop. Many of you suggested The Onion print for a very precocious preteen.
It arrived today and it is a huge hit. HUGE.
The official verdict is, “it’s like [your old people’s] Adbusters but not so despressing.”

Adbusters but not so depressing what an endorsement. This should be the new slogan.

I wouldn't advocate a return to an Adbusters style 90s politics but a default skepticism of corporations and their products is a good thing

This sublimation of political action into consumption is more depressing than the Adbusters 90s stuff. Influencers who have turned “politics” into a media genre or branding isn’t even the worst of it: it’s that many Americans, feeling helpless and scared, cannot conceive of action outside the market
“With a single post or video, we can influence thousands of guests to try a food, drink, or experience in the parks,” she says. “I couldn’t, in good conscience, keep giving them free publicity knowing they don’t support free speech and are willing to bow to fascism."
The Disney Adults Dumping the Mouse Over Jimmy Kimmel
Jimmy Kimmel and Disney’s battle has not only taken over the news cycle, but it has sent the Disney internet into shambles.

It used to be universally acknowledged in the left that advertising was evil and an intrusion, then Adbusters made talking about advertising cringe.
But advertising IS absolutely intrusive, unethical, and politically relevant

I was reading all that stuff in the early 2000s, with a steady info diet of Mother Jones, Adbusters, the Utne Reader and so on. I’m glad I was able to broaden my intake and be more discerning. Not everybody got out.

I watched this video about how the alt-right repurposed the leftist prankster tactics of 60s counterculture through Adbusters culture of late 90s-early-00s for the far right. It worked bc the GOP responded & subsumed while the Dem party is too center-right to incorporate left ideology

Anyways, the church of sub genius is kooky and subversive when you’re 19, just like Adbusters is “subversive”, until you realize that it’s all surface level bullshit that’s preventing you from interrogating the actual fucking world historic monster empire you live in.
