Not to mention that in order to be competitive for the big grants, you have to have experience applying for, and -- if successful -- managing the small grants. Expecting ECRs to jump straight to a major UKRI/ERC grant is unrealistic.

@EUvsDisinfo @elonmusk This is some first output of my @ERC_Research @MEGEO_ERC. Unfortunately, this is becoming more relevant than I thought when I wrote the grant proposal in 2020 (UKRI Future Leaders unsuccessful), 2021 (ERC successful but only via reserve list after Russian invasion of Ukraine).

I was saying this morning we have a model of how to do something like this with the UKRI underwrite when the UK pulled out of Horizon - where we funded ERC projects ourselves, as they'd already 'passed' competitive peer review.
Imagine if we said we'd do the same here.
We should be throwing up lab space in places like Cambridge and Tatton Park at a vast rate.

Biggest opportunity to recruit scientific talent since the 1930s.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions

Thanks (not) to Brexit, I had to take the UKRI guarantee money instead so I think I get audited by UKRI maybe using ERC rules? It's all very confusing being held to 2 sets of Ts&Cs. (But overall better than moving country on 2 months notice...)

Well, it turns out Google's AI always gets the PI on my project wrong - there are three different men it tries to offer as my replacements, but never a woman.

(I think Gary is listed below me on the April 2024 list of advanced grant winners.)
