New publication about all the exciting additions we made to FishSounds throughout versions 2 and 3: doi.org/10.1111/geb....!

Since then, we've added even more recordings thanks to the FishEye Collaborative, and we have a lot more planned for next year!

Tried my classic 'obscure fish question' with DeepSeek and just like with ChatGPT, results are mostly wrong

(wrong family, wrong common name, wrong max length (it's 40cm in fishbase)

🌊 FishBase & SeaLifeBase are global databases used by scientists, students and ocean advocates worldwide — but keeping them free & up-to-date takes continuous support.

Q-quatics needs sustainable funding to keep them running. 💙

Q-quatics and ICS FORTH met in Crete, Greece 🇬🇷 to tackle issues around transforming #FishBase into a semantic knowledge base. 🐟📊

Some of the data simplifications in FishBase aren’t obvious to non-biologists—so this 3-day deep dive was essential to get everyone aligned. 🐟🧠 #SemantyFish #OpenScience

#CollaboratorSpotlight: For Dr. Chuck Blend, the ocean’s best stories come from its smallest —and squirmiest— residents.

He’s described 60+ new worm species, loves the Humpback anglerfish, and helps #FishBase share deep-sea biodiversity knowledge with the world. 🪱🐟

Thread about the very strange Escolar (Lepidocybium flavobrunneum), which is often (illegally) passed off as tuna or other high-value fatty fish, & the weird & bad things that can happen to you if you eat it. it's basically the fish version of Olestra

This project would just be a matter of comparing a few hundred names/numbers between Wikipedia, IUCN Red List data, and Fishbase.

We just released v1.1.0 of our #eDNA amplicon nextflow pipeline!
We replaced the way LCAs are calculated - we now rely on Fishbase taxonomy first, then WoRMS and NCBI - and have added FAIRe-standard-aligned output files

Do any fishbase users know if there is a (semi?)formal definition of their 'DemersPelag' habitat variable anywhere? For instance, are there depth limits distinguishing bathydemersal (or bathypelagic) from demersal (or pelagic)? I've been looking but so far can't find documentation.
