Mazen Masoud was an anaesthesiologist when conflict first broke out in his home country of Libya in 2011. He was compelled to act when he saw the destruction of his country and the growing power of jihadist groups unfold. A secret double-life as a human rights activist and journalist began to unravel in 2015 forcing him to flee. How do you begin to built a new life from scratch in an unknown country and where you don’t even speak the language? How does being a different gender from the one on your identity documents complicate things? This is Mazen’s story.
