Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig Read in paperback 5/5 stars We find ourselves back in Blunder once again after the events of One Dark Window left off. Now this is how a sequel is supposed to be written! Everything from my One Dark Window review holds up here & more. My only complaint is I wish it was longer because I didn’t want the story to end. I absolutely love these characters & magic system it has been a tearful goodbye from me. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in & was shocked to find out it was multipov but also who the povs were. We still get to follow our main ogs (some more than others) but Gillig then gives us a deeper dive into another story along the way. No matter whose pov it was in the story I was excited all the same. It felt like I was reading the characters going through two separate plots & the both met up at the end. We continue our story in a fresh way that doesn’t feel like I’m reading the first formula all over again. The stakes are higher than ever before & we are afforded new sides that will change your perspective. Seriously, I went into this not liking certain characters & then falling in love with them. I think that’s where some opinions differed, however I enjoyed getting to know these characters on a deeper level while still progressing the plot. The ending wrapped everything up perfectly. All loose ends were addressed & taken care of. I can’t remember many times where I book has left me speechless. This is a story that will linger & if you haven’t read this duology you are missing out!!

I’ve always wanted to lean horror and now I feel like I have the craft to do so. In terms of “new”, my thoughts turn to trying different risks in the actual storytelling part: multipov, letters/other mediums to enhance, playing with perspective/biases, etc

I know I do! Lately, I've been contemplating diving into YA horror or fantasy instead of just adult fiction. I even bought the Save the Cat! Writes a Young Adult Novel, so we'll see how it goes!

I did not like silver flames. At all. I had to skim it.

I also did not like her writing style switchover in general to multipov so that didn’t help.

I read 2/3 shadow and bone books but also had issues with it but very different ones. I still need to finish the last one.

The Liars Club by Jamie Lee Fry. Read on kindle. 3/5 stars Max Jennings is just your average guy working at the local record store. He is passionate about what he does & his boss is the closest thing he has to a friend. So when his boss suddenly starts acting weird he decides to go out of his way to help him. Unknowingly, he stumbles into the Liars Club & joins as a way to help his boss. What he doesn’t know, they know his secret & if he doesn’t play along with their game all will be revealed. The beginning of this book started slowly, but once everything was established it picked up quickly. The multipov was used well in building suspense. The premise was intriguing & was able to surprise me. Was I able to guess some of the twists? Yes, but that didn’t deter me from finishing it. Some of the secrets felt a little underwhelming and it feels like not much happens until the end. However, if you don’t mind some suspension of belief then I’d say this is a light easy murder mystery read for you.

Every POV and tense can work, and it depends on the story too what's the best way to tell it.

I do love 3th person omniscient with multiPOV a lot though, and the people and industries who say people shouldn't use it can go hug a Saguaro or tickle a musk-ox or so.
