#OfficialLanguages
Had the pleasure of participating in roundtable discussion on how to recruit/retain students in #translation programs at the @act-cats.bsky.social unconference at #Congressh. Lots of great ideas shared including more collab with social work programs & nursing programs. Thoughts? #OfficialLanguages

All my followers who follow #Covid #LongCovid and #Quebec you need to follow my pal @ninjazz636.bsky.social she’s fluent in both #OfficialLanguages.

There are times when I’m talking/writing about learning #OfficialLanguages that I feel like I’m shouting into the void. But the question remains: if what we’ve done for 50+ years hasn’t produced the desired results, why are we still doing it?

9. Learning #OfficialLanguages is only a chore **if you make it a chore**. Diversify! Have fun. Who says you’re not learning if you’re laughing? Let’s ditch the hoary old chestnut that only boring learning is effective.

8. Learning #OfficialLanguages isn’t just limited to the National Capital Region. Ensure that the same quality of training is available to people working in the regions.

6. Does your department encourage the use of both #OfficialLanguages in meetings and work sessions? Monitor that balance, and watch out for people getting drowned out because they’re not as fluent and can’t make their opinions heard as well as the others.

5. Ensure that you’re listening to all of the voices in the room when it comes to #OfficialLanguages. Don’t just listen to the loudest voices, or the ones that focus on telling you what you want to hear.

4. Don’t treat your #OfficialLanguages training differently than your operational training. It’s all part of the same portfolio of skills that enployees should be developing to advance in their careers.

3. Is the issue more behvioural than linguistic? Talk to your employees about why they’re not using the target #OfficialLanguages outside of the classroom.
And then REALLY listen.

I just saw that one of our intake forms at work asks learners to choose their learning style.😶 Again. Does anyone have a box they need to fill in for #OfficialLanguages? I. Just. Can’t. Anymore.

Here's another question we need to ask about #GoC #telework: will it encourage more pedagogical and geographic diversity for our #OfficialLanguages training options? As things are now, options are too...

So if #LearningStyles are not really A Thing, does that mean that I can create my own (tongue-in-cheek) sets of learning styles that I've seen over 20+ years of second language/English teaching? #OL #OfficialLanguages #ESL #EFL

“Learners who have a mastery goal and orientation (such as “I want to get good at this”) achieve better long-term retention of whatever is taught than those with a compliance or performance orientation...” (So true for #OfficialLanguages !)

They joys of perfecting a second language: Someone just sent an e-mail about a "conflit d'horaire". I didn't see the "L" and thought, "Oh, God, what's a confit d'horaire? Another piece of slang I'll have to master, so that I don't stick out?" #CoffeePlease #OL #OfficialLanguages

Working on creating some #OfficialLanguages practice tools, & had a thought: No one minds practice and homework if it provides value, confidence & outcomes. They DO mind mindless busywork. Why is there an emphasis on the latter, and not the value and payoff? #OL #bilingualism

I just had an #OfficialLanguages thought that is either realistic or totally out of line and likely to get me fired:
